Your Nerd SIde latest episode:
Edge of Tomorrow premiered in 2014, and a talk about a sequel has been going on ever since. As Edge of Tomorrow 2 continues to gain momentum, director Doug Liman has just shared a hopeful update.
Speaking to Empire to promote his latest film, The Instigators, Liman also addressed Edge of Tomorrow's future. The sci-fi film followed Tom Cruise's Major William Cage, a soldier who finds himself in a time loop, relieving the day of an alien attack until he finds a way to beat the forces that threatened the planet. The film had an underwhelming response at the box office, but found new life after its premiere, quickly becoming one of Tom Cruise's best movies.
A conversation about the sequel dates back to 2016, yet nothing has materialized yet. The film, which also starred Emily Blunt in the lead role, has received a lot of interest lately, and even Cruise addressed the sci-fi film for its 10th anniversary. Now, Liman continued that the sequel isn't dead yet: “No, we keep talking about it,” the director said, referring to himself and Cruise. “We love that world,” Liman continued, noting that, despite the long period in-between the film and a possible sequel, he wants to continue the story. “I don't know how long Cameron took with his Terminators,” Liman notes, “but at the time it felt like a long time.”
If I was given the choice, I'll choose making films that people 50 years from now are still watching.
“Tom and I just actually rewatched it about two months ago, because I hadn't seen it in 10 years,” Liman revealed. “I was like, ‘Wow, that is a really good movie.’” The director continued that, even if a sequel doesn't happen, he is proud of what he achieved with the 2014 film.
“I haven't necessarily always had the good fortune of having movies that have huge opening weekends,” he admits. “Bourne Identity lost to Scooby-Doo [on] its opening weekend. And Swingers came and went from the theaters. What I've come to understand is, I'm making movies for the long term. I'm an ego-driven guy, I'd like to get accolades now. But I also recognize that, if I was given the choice, I'll choose making films that people 50 years from now are still watching.”
Edge of Tomorrow Became a Fan-Favorite Film
When it premiered in 2014, Edge of Tomorrow had an underwhelming response. The film grossed $367 million at the worldwide box office (via The Numbers), a figure that would've been impressive with a smaller budget. The sci-fi film needed a budget of $178 million to become the film the audiences loved, which means the film was just starting to make a profit. The usual rule of thumb with Hollywood blockbusters is that it needs to make at least twice its budget to start making a profit, after the marketing and theater costs.
However, although Edge of Tomorrow didn't become a huge success at the box office, the audience and critics loved the film. Edge of Tomorrow sits at a 91% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and with a similar score of 90% from the audience. Since discovering the film, fans have been asking for a sequel, and even Emily Blunt herself admitted she would like a sequel. So far, there is no official confirmation about the sequel, but the recent interest from Blunt, Cruise, and Liman seems encouraging.
