Not every beloved Pixar movie needs a sequel — and according to Brad Bird, Ratatouille is one of them.

As Toy Story 5 continues to bring audiences back to theaters, Pixar fans may be wondering whether other classics from the studio’s golden era could receive follow-ups. But Bird, the writer-director behind Ratatouille, recently made it clear that he has no interest in returning to Remy’s kitchen for a second film.

During an interview with Collider while promoting his new animated movie Ray Gunn, Bird was asked whether he would ever consider making Ratatouille 2. His answer was direct: no.

Bird explained that Pixar has gently tested the idea over the years, sometimes bringing it up as a joke that carried a little bit of seriousness behind it. But for him, the story of Remy, Linguini, and Gusteau’s restaurant reached its natural conclusion in the original 2007 film.

Released in 2007, Ratatouille follows Remy, a rat with a refined sense of taste and a dream of becoming a chef in Paris. He forms an unlikely partnership with Alfredo Linguini, a young kitchen worker at Gusteau’s restaurant, and together they prove that talent can come from the most unexpected places.

The film became one of Pixar’s most acclaimed releases, earning widespread critical praise, winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, and grossing more than $623 million worldwide.

Bird said the challenge with sequels is that audiences naturally want more when a movie connects with them. But that does not always mean there is a meaningful story left to tell. He pointed to The Iron Giant as another example of a film that fans have asked about over the years, even though Bird believes its story also stands complete on its own.

While Ratatouille 2 may not be happening, Bird’s other major Pixar franchise is moving forward. Incredibles 3 was officially announced by Disney and Pixar at D23 in 2024. Bird, who wrote and directed both The Incredibles and Incredibles 2, returned to write the screenplay for the third installment.

However, Bird will not direct Incredibles 3. Because of his work on Ray Gunn for Skydance Animation and Netflix, directing duties will go to Peter Sohn, who previously directed Pixar’s Elemental and has worked on multiple Pixar projects connected to Bird.

Bird’s Ray Gunn has been a passion project for decades. The neo-noir science-fiction mystery follows Ray Gunn, Earth’s last human private eye, as he becomes involved in a strange case involving aliens, murder, and a mysterious star named Venus Nova. Sam Rockwell voices Ray Gunn, while Scarlett Johansson voices Venus Nova.

Ray Gunn is scheduled to arrive on Netflix on December 18. Meanwhile, fans can revisit Ratatouille on Disney+ — even if a sequel is not on the menu.
