Ryan Coogler has been behind many critically acclaimed and commercially successful films, including the Black Panther and Creed film series. Now, he reunited with Michael B. Jordan for Sinners, giving the actor the opportunity of a dual role. Sinners is now officially in theaters, and it achieved a rare feat on Rotten Tomatoes, as both fans and critics are in agreement over its stunning score.
Sinners debuted with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes from the critics. Even though it lost the rare score, the horror mystery vampire movie holds a 97% rating from both camps — critics and the audience. On top of that, the movie has also received the two coveted badges, Certified Fresh and Verified Hot.
The film has received incredible praise, especially when looking at the director and lead star Michael B. Jordan's latest achievements. Although it's a vampire film, Ryan Coogler redefined the genre with his take, which combines both the supernatural tropes with cultural themes and social commentary. It has been referred to as the "best and most daring" project for both Coogler and Jordan, with many calling Sinners Coogler's best movie, and the best film released this year. The audience echoed the same feelings, praising the acting, cinematography, and the story.

Sinners is a period supernatural horror film, which is set in the 1930s in the Southern United States. Michael B. Jordan plays twin brothers Elijah "Smoke" and Elias "Stack, who return to their hometown to start again, but discover a greater evil is waiting to welcome them home. The movie also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, Buddy Guy, and Delroy Lindo.
Sinners' Reception Paves the Way for a Thrilling Box Office Run
The vampire gothic horror might be off to an amazing start with its stunning reviews. However, the road to success is long. The film's budget is reportedly between $90 million and $100, which is a huge budget for a horror film. For comparison, the recently released Oscar-nominated Nosferatu by Robert Eggers had a budget half its size, of $50 million. With Coogler redefining the genre with a bigger film than a regular vampire movie, Sinners needs a lot of money to make a profit.
To break even, Sinners needs around $185 million, so it would cover its high budget and distribution and marketing costs. Variety projected Sinners is expected to make around $40 million to $50 million domestically during its opening weekend, with another $10 million to $15 million at the international box office. The battle for box office success is a difficult journey, but its stunning reception from both critics and the audience, as well as the record as the highest-rated vampire movie, might convince moviegoers to give the film a chance.
Sinners is now playing in theaters.
