The Original Ashita no Joe Anime Series Streams in Full in the U.S. for the First Time
Ashita no Joe became a phenomenon in manga and animation. Based on Asao Takaamori and Tetsuya Chiba’s 1968 manga of the same name, the anime originally enjoyed a broadcast run beginning in April 1970, and ending with the conclusion of Season 2 in August 1981. The series is considered the late anime director Osamu Dezaki’s masterwork -- anime history buffs may recognize his name from the likes of Astro Boy (episode director), Aim for the Ace!and The Rose of Versailles. Dezaki's directorial debut, Ashita no Joe follows the eponymous boxer’s trials and tribulations, from a heated rivalry with Toru Rikiishi to training under steely mentor Danpei Tange.
Foundational to sports anime as a whole, Ashita no Joe continues to impress and resonate with audiences. MEGALOBOX, released in celebration of the former manga's 50th anniversary, reimagined the original series through a cyberpunk lens, further solidifying the series' generational appeal. However, anime isn't the only Rocky-style comeback for Tomorrow's Joe. Publisher Kodansha USA plans to give the manga its first official English edition before the new year in 2025. While the exact release date for this manga is unclear, newcomers and old fans can now stream the original anime series on Crunchyroll.
