Harley Quinn Gets Season 4 Renewal at HBO Max - With a New, Female Boss

HBO Max announced the fourth season renewal of its hit adult animated series, Harley Quinn, with a new showrunner taking charge.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming giant greenlit a new season for the DC show weeks ahead of its Season 3 finale on Sept. 15. Along with another year of Harley Quinn's adventures comes a new head writer, as Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker will be stepping down. Sarah Peters, who has written for the show over the years and serves as a consulting producer, will take the reins when the show returns. Schumacker marked the occasion by posting a celebratory image on his Twitter account.

"We are ecstatic that HBO Max wants the story of Harley and Ivy to continue," Halpern and Schumacker said in a statement. "And we are equally thrilled that this next season will be in great hands with Sarah Peters as our showrunner and Ceci Aranovich overseeing animation production, as they have both greatly influenced the show with their brilliance since the beginning."

In Harley Quinn's third season, the series sees the return of Harley (Kaley Cuoco) and Poison Ivy (Lake Bell) after they return to Gotham City to pursue the latter's dream of turning it into an Eden paradise. While many of the traditional villains seem on a path towards bettering themselves, like Harley and Ivy's budding relationship and Joker's attempts to become a good family man, several of Gotham's known heroes appear to be on a downward spiral. Other cast members include Ron Funches, J.B. Smoove, Alan Tudyk, Matt Oberg, Christopher Meloni, Andy Daly, Diedrich Bader, James Adomian, Sanaa Lathan, Briana Cuoco and Harvey Guillen.

The renewal comes weeks after Warner Bros.' shocking cancellation of the Batgirl film, among other movies and series under its wheelhouse. Despite several DC projects appearing at risk as the company cleaned house, reports indicated that Harley Quinn was safe from the ax. Halpern and Schumacker commented shortly after that they felt "hopeful" for a Season 4 of Harley Quinn due to the series' immense popularity despite fan fears that it might not survive the shake-up.

Harley Quinn Season 4 has no release window. The third season concludes on Sept. 15, streaming exclusively on HBO Max.
