What If...? Season 2 Gets New Trailer and Holiday Premiere Date

Latest Episode Your Nerd Side:

Shared to YouTube by Marvel Entertainment, the new trailer reveals a sneak peek at the new episodes of the animated anthology show's second season. It includes new stories featuring characters like Peggy Carter, Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor Ant-Man, Korg, Happy Hogan, and others. Also confirmed in the trailer is the premiere date for Season 2, which will fall on Dec. 22, 2023. That date is also highlited on the official key art for Season 2, which further teases the holiday theme. Ahead of the big premiere, the new trailer can be viewed below.

Jeffrey Wright is back as the voice of The Watcher, as can be heard in the new trailer for What If...? Season 2. Because it was screened at San Diego Comic-Con, it's also known that the first episode of Season 2 will be, "What If... Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?" Other stories that will be included in the new season pertain to Odin fighting The Mandarin and Tony Stark replacing Thor for a Valkyrie and Hulk team-up on Sakaar. There are also rumors of a story about Hela finding the Ten Rings.

The animated series is inspired by the Marvel Comics series that utilizes a similar concept. The non-canon stories, set elsewhere in the multiverse, imagine how certain events may have played out differently in major ways. Wright's Watcher serves as the narrator and constant thread from one story to the next, as each of them are unconnected to one another. Developed by A.C. Bradley, the first season was met with widespread praise, leading to the second season renewal. There's also a third season that's planned for the show beyond the upcoming Season 2.

Season 2 Will Be Wackier Than Season 1 of What If...?

"The first season Kevin [Feige] wanted to keep it a little bit closer to the vest, have a little thing that was different and that little thing made these things different, but still tied very much to either a moment in the movies or a particular film itself. Now there’s more films and things to pull from, so we don’t have to have just a tiny moment," director Bryan Andrews previously teased of what will make Season 2 different, per Deadline. "We can expand out and things can get a little bit wackier. We take it up a notch in Season 2 and then in Season 3 we just go even wackier. In season two, we have different characters that we haven’t really got a chance to play with before and we see how they’ll integrate with some of the favorites that come back. There’s lots of really cool stuff and I can’t wait for people to see it."

The first episode of What If...? Season 2 will premiere on Dec. 22, 2023, with a new episode being released daily until Dec. 30, on Disney+. Season 1 is currently available to watch on the streaming platform.
