Rolling out into theaters 40 years ago, the classic 1986 animated Transformers had a dramatic (and somewhat traumatic) impact on the franchise. Now, fans can pre-order an upcoming book that finally showcases the true development story of a film that was beyond good, beyond evil and still beyond their wildest imaginations.

Written by Chris Prince, The Transformers: The Movie: Ultimate Visual History peels back the layers of the Cybertronian cinematic onion to really explore what went into it. This includes a look at the decision to kill off key characters and interviews with the behind-the-scenes talent. Celebrating the movie and its legacy, it's one of several upcoming releases tied to the animated film's current anniversary.

New Transformers Movie Visual Guide Showcases Rare Art, Storyboards & More

Much of The Transformers: The Movie: Ultimate Visual History will be told through interviews, with one interviewee being story director Flint Dille (who also worked on the Transformers animated series that had two seasons before the movie). The many notable story beats will be explored through concept art and other images, with many of the designs created by or derived from artist Floro Dery.

These storyboards come straight from the Hasbro archives, and they're certain to surprise even the most ardent fans of the film who think they've seen everything. Other aspects include the rip-roaring rock music soundtrack and score, which featured the frets and synths of talent such as Stan Bush, Lion, Weird Al Yankovic and composer Vince DiCola (who also notably scored Rocky IV). Of course, the film and the franchise can't be mentioned without diving into the corresponding toys, with these also being a major part of the visual-based book.

rom there, the book will look at how the movie impacted the development of the franchise throughout the rest of the 1980s, as well as the impact it continues to have on its characters, concepts and mythology. Currently available to pre-order for $50, it's scheduled to be released on October 27, 2026.

This comes as celebrations for the 40th anniversary of The Transformers: The Movie in is full swing, with the occasion marked by Hasbro in several ways -- including a humorous "apology tour," referencing the infamous death of Optimus Prime in the movie. Numerous other forms of merchandise and memorabilia are currently being sold, such as toys in the Transformers Studio Series line that bring the movie's cast of Autobots and Decepticons to life.
