Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake Is Finally Happening

The long-awaited remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is finally happening.

The trailer -- released during the PlayStation Showcase 2021 -- begins with a voiceover declaring that peace is a lie. "That is what the Sith believe," the mysterious woman continues. "They promise power. Now, they wield it. We face the greatest Sith in generations. They must be stopped." As the voiceover unfolds, a shadowy figure ignites a red lightsaber, and it's soon revealed to be Darth Revan. The trailer then ends with a message that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake is "a legend remade for PS5."

Reports of a Knights of the Old Republic remake have been circulating for quite some time, and in January 2021, it was rumored that a "mystery studio" was involved (it's worth noting the trailer confirms the remake hails from Sony Interactive Entertainment, Lucasfilm Games and Aspyr Media).

"Why remake Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic? Well, nearly 20 years after it first debuted, the original KOTOR is still one of the most beloved games of all time," Aspyr Media Lead Producer Ryan Treadwell said in a PlayStation blog post. "And even as Star Wars travels to new horizons, we know the community is as eager as ever to return to this iconic era of storytelling and action." Treadwell also noted the game is being remade from the ground up"for a new generation with modern tech, features, visuals and more, while maintaining the integrity of the story and characters that we’ve come to cherish."

Released in 2003, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a role-playing game that takes place roughly 4,000 years before the events of the original trilogy and centers on a mysterious Jedi who traverses the galaxy while attempting to defeat Darth Malak. Over the course of the game, the Jedi forms a crew that aids him in his quest, but it's later revealed that the Jedi is actually the former Sith Lord Darth Revan, whose memories were wiped out by the Jedi Council.

The original game was developed by BioWare and published by LucasArts, and it was followed one year later by Knights of the Old Republic II -- The Sith Lords, developed by Obsidian Entertainment.
