Star Trek’s Next Movie Could Take the Franchise Somewhere Completely New

After nearly 60 years of exploring the final frontier, Star Trek may be preparing for one of its biggest changes yet.

Paramount’s upcoming Star Trek movie is expected to move beyond familiar characters like Kirk, Spock and Picard and instead introduce an entirely new group of characters, worlds and adventures.

That could be exactly what the franchise needs.

The previous big-screen reboot began with J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek in 2009, followed by Star Trek Into Darkness in 2013 and Star Trek Beyond in 2016. A completely new movie could introduce unfamiliar planets, alien civilizations, technologies and political conflicts without being restricted by decades of established character history.

It could also create something that both longtime fans and newcomers can discover at the same time.

Returning to What Makes Star Trek Different

The challenge will be making sure a new direction still feels like Star Trek.

At its best, the franchise has always been about more than spaceships and battles.
