Nova Could Become the New Face of Marvel’s Cosmic Universe

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is entering a major transition. Several of the heroes who defined its earliest years are either gone or no longer at the center of the story, including Iron Man, Black Widow and Steve Rogers’ Captain America. With Avengers: Doomsday expected to push even more longtime storylines toward a conclusion, Marvel is clearly preparing for another generation of characters to step forward.

The arrival of the Fantastic Four and the eventual introduction of the X-Men are major pieces of that strategy, but Marvel also has another area of the MCU that still holds enormous potential: space.

For years, the Guardians of the Galaxy films were the heart of Marvel’s cosmic storytelling. Now that the original Guardians era has largely concluded, Marvel may be preparing another hero to take over that role — Nova.

Star-Lord Helped Build Marvel’s Cosmic Universe

When Marvel first announced Guardians of the Galaxy, the project seemed like one of the studio’s biggest risks. The characters were relatively unknown compared with Iron Man, Thor or Captain America, and the team included a talking raccoon and a sentient tree.

The gamble worked.

James Gunn transformed the Guardians into some of Marvel’s most popular characters, while Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill became the audience’s guide to the stranger corners of the MCU.

Star-Lord was especially important because he provided a recognizable human perspective in a universe filled with aliens, distant planets and bizarre civilizations. The Guardians movies mixed science fiction, comedy, action and emotional stories about friendship and found family.

That combination made Marvel’s cosmic universe feel less like traditional science fiction and more like a colorful space adventure in the spirit of franchises such as Star Wars.

However, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 also felt like the end of an era. A new version of the Guardians exists, and Star-Lord is still alive and capable of returning, but Marvel now needs another character who can expand the cosmic side of the MCU instead of simply repeating what came before.

That could be where Nova enters the picture.

Marvel Is Reportedly Developing Nova

Marvel Studios has been connected to a Nova project for years, and recent reports have once again suggested that development is moving forward.

Nova already has strong connections to the MCU.

The Nova Corps were introduced in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie as the intergalactic peacekeeping organization protecting Xandar. Nova Prime Irani Rael led the group, but the organization was later devastated when Thanos attacked Xandar while searching for the Power Stone.

That history creates a natural starting point for a Nova story.

Rather than introducing another random cosmic hero, Marvel could explore what happened after the destruction of Xandar and what became of the Nova Corps.

Richard Rider appears to be the most likely version of Nova to take center stage.

In Marvel Comics, Rider becomes one of the Nova Corps' most important heroes and eventually takes on enormous responsibility after much of the organization collapses. He has participated in some of Marvel's biggest cosmic conflicts and has frequently operated as both a superhero and a protector of the galaxy.

Another Nova, Sam Alexander, also exists in the comics. Because Sam is younger, however, he could potentially fit better alongside Marvel's next generation of heroes, such as Ms. Marvel and other possible Young Avengers or Champions characters.

Richard Rider would make more sense as the centerpiece of a larger cosmic franchise.

Nova Could Be Very Different From Star-Lord

Nova would not simply need to become another Star-Lord.

That may actually be his biggest advantage.

Peter Quill was essentially an outlaw and adventurer who frequently stumbled into situations much bigger than himself. Nova, by contrast, could operate as something closer to an intergalactic law-enforcement officer.

That gives Marvel an opportunity to tell a different type of space story.

Nova could investigate conflicts involving the Kree, Skrulls and other civilizations while attempting to restore stability to a galaxy that has experienced years of wars, invasions and political upheaval.

That type of story could still feature the humor, spectacle and strange worlds that audiences enjoyed in Guardians of the Galaxy, but Nova could bring a stronger detective, military or even political element to Marvel's cosmic universe.

Recent Marvel Comics stories such as Imperial demonstrate how well that idea could work. Nova can operate in the middle of enormous galactic conflicts while attempting to discover who is manipulating different factions behind the scenes.

Instead of simply saving a planet, Nova could be responsible for keeping an entire region of space from collapsing into chaos.

Star-Lord and Nova Could Even Work Together

Marvel would not necessarily need to choose between Nova and Star-Lord.

In fact, putting the two characters together could make the transition even more interesting.

Peter Quill's background as a former outlaw would naturally clash with Nova's responsibilities as an intergalactic officer. Marvel could turn that relationship into something resembling a cosmic buddy-cop adventure.

Star-Lord could understand criminals, smugglers and the less respectable corners of the galaxy, while Nova would represent law, responsibility and order.

Their personalities would likely conflict, but their skills could complement each other.

It would also allow Marvel to keep one of its most popular cosmic characters involved while gradually establishing Nova as the hero responsible for carrying this part of the MCU forward.

Nova Could Lead Marvel's Next Cosmic Era

The biggest reason Nova makes sense for Marvel is that the character offers something both familiar and new.

He can deliver the large-scale action and colorful intergalactic adventures associated with the Guardians while opening the door to completely different stories involving the Nova Corps, galactic politics, alien civilizations and cosmic threats.

Marvel's future will likely be divided among several corners of its universe. The Fantastic Four can explore science and discovery. The X-Men can introduce mutants. Characters such as Ghost Rider could expand Marvel's supernatural side.

Nova could become the hero who keeps Marvel looking toward the stars.

Star-Lord helped audiences discover Marvel's cosmic universe.

Nova may be the character who takes them even deeper into it.
