Solid Snake is officially reporting for cinematic duty. Sony Pictures announced today that it is officially putting a Metal Gear Solid movie into development. Final Destination: Bloodlines directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein are attached to direct the adaptation as part of a new first-look deal with Sony.
“Metal Gear Solid was nothing short of a groundbreaking cinematic masterpiece that forever revolutionized video games. We are thrilled and honored to bring Hideo Kojima’s iconic characters and unforgettable world to life," Lipovsky and Stein said in a statement.
Lipovsky and Stein are hot off the breakout success of Final Destination: Bloodlines, the first new installment of the horror series in 14 years, which debuted in May 2025. The film earned $317.0 million globally on a $50 million budget, becoming one of the franchise's best-reviewed and highest-grossing films.
The news comes as Sony Pictures Entertainment is laying off hundreds of staff. The layoffs are part of the company's strategic repositioning to focus more on franchises and IP expansion, including video game adaptations.
Metal Gear Solid Is Finally Getting a Movie
Metal Gear Solid is the modern incarnation of the Metal Gear video game series. The games are a blend of sci-fi and military espionage that cast players in the role of Solid Snake, a super-soldier and super spy, frequently tasked with infiltrating labyrinthine locales occupied by terrorists to prevent their use of the destructive weapon that gives the series its name, Metal Gear.
The most recently released installment of the Metal Gear series' non-linear narrative is 2015's Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Metal Gear's lore and narrative have both become exponentially more complex, which could make it a challenging story to adapt for mainstream movie audiences.
A Metal Gear Solid movie has been in development for 20 years. Series creator Hideo Kojima announced as much as 2006. Rumors and speculation about who would direct and star followed. However, there were no official updates until 2012, the Metal Gear franchise's 25th anniversary, when Kojima confirmed that Arad Productions would produce the film for Sony's Columbia Pictures.
"We're working on the script some more, but I can't talk about it yet," Avi Arad, one of the co-owners of Arad Productions, said in 2024. "I think everyone's going to be really excited and surprised."
Who Could Play Solid Snake In the Metal Gear Solid Movie?

Every Metal Gear Solid fan is likely to have their own opinion on who should play Solid Snake in the upcoming film. Kojima himself may have offered one possible casting choice. Kojima recently compared Alan Ritchson's Netflix sci-fi War Machine to a blend of Metal Gear Solid and Predator.
"Wow, it was quite entertaining," Kojima tweeted of War Machine. "It’s basically “Predator” x “Metal Gear”! A geek-pleasing film that really evokes the feel of 80s–90s sci-fi action movies. If you like this kind of thing, you should have a great time with it. Alan Ritchson from “Reacher” (“Jack Reacher: The Outlaw”) brings great flavor to the role. Dennis Quaid also appears in it."
