Actress Carrie Fisher created a strong reputation for herself when it came to being outspoken. Star Wars co-star and onscreen brother, Mark Hamill, recalls three powerful words she gave him in a piece of advice.
Mark Hamill famously played Luke Skywalker in the iconic space fantasy series. When he started performing on Broadway, he downplayed the fact that he was a Jedi Knight and childhood hero to many, instead choosing to include in the playbill that he was "also known for a series of popular space movies." Fisher challenged him on that, Hamill said in an interview with NPR's Fresh air, per Entertainment Weekly.
"She goes, 'What's the deal? How come you don't mention Star Wars?'" Hamill said. "And I said, 'Well, I want to show that I have a resume that includes extensive theater credits.' And she said, 'Hey, get over yourself. You're Luke Skywalker. I'm Princess Leia. Embrace it.'"
Fisher did indeed embrace her role as Princess Leia. Hamill went on, "And I kind of saw what she meant, you know, because you say to yourself, 'What territory do I occupy that no one else does?' So she was someone that sort of put it in perspective for me."
Hamill came to thoroughly embrace Star Wars, as all fans of the Disney era know. He reprised his role as Luke Skywalker in the sequel trilogy of films - and he probably would have shared more screentime with Fisher had she not sadly passed away in 2016..
Mark Hamill Won't Be Part of Any New Star Wars Films

There are new Star Wars films planned, with Daisy Ridley's Rey in the main role - but don't expect Mark Hamill to show up playing Luke Skywalker again.
“I am so grateful to George [Lucas] for letting me be a part of that back in the day, the humble days when George called Star Wars ‘the most expensive low-budget movie ever made,’” Hamill said. “We never expected it to become a permanent franchise and a part of pop culture like that. But my deal is, I had my time. I’m appreciative of that, but I really think they should focus on the future and all the new characters.”
He reiterated that in his interview with Fresh Air. "I'm always grateful for George for letting me be a part of it, but it's over," he said. "I mean, as an actor, you finish the job, you go onto the next job. You don't hang onto the prior job. So I always have to really make an adjustment when I'm talking to fans where it's very much in the present, it's very much about the future, which is fine, you know?"
Hamill still very much appreciated by those fans."If it weren't for the fans, I wouldn't be here. And so I'm grateful to them," he said. "They know details I have never heard of... Like I say, it was an important part of my life that's now over."
The Star Wars series can be streamed on Disney+.
