James McAvoy Has One Big Hope for Marvel’s X-Men Reboot

Marvel has a lot riding on the X-Men.

The mutants are finally moving toward a full Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot following their upcoming appearance in Avengers: Doomsday, and that means somebody is going to have the difficult job of becoming the MCU’s new Professor Charles Xavier.

Talk about pressure.

Patrick Stewart made Professor X iconic in the original X-Men movies. Then James McAvoy stepped into the role for X-Men: First Class and managed to create a younger version of Xavier that felt completely different while still honoring the character.

Now another actor gets a turn.

And McAvoy has some advice:

McAvoy Says the New Professor X Needs to Be Different

McAvoy recently reflected on what it was like following Patrick Stewart when X-Men: First Class rebooted the franchise.

At first, he says, the cast didn’t necessarily feel overwhelmed by expectations because First Class felt like such a different kind of movie.

That gave them some freedom.

But once audiences started paying attention?

Yeah — then the pressure arrived.

His advice to whoever plays Xavier next is pretty simple: enjoy the role and find something new inside the character.

That may be the smartest approach Marvel can take.

Patrick Stewart played Xavier as an older, experienced leader who had spent years trying to build peace between mutants and humanity.

McAvoy got to explore a younger Charles — talented, arrogant at times, emotional and still figuring out exactly what kind of leader he wanted to become.

The MCU version shouldn’t simply recreate either performance.

We’ve already seen those Professor X stories.

Give us another one.

Marvel Has a Huge Opportunity With the X-Men

That is what makes this reboot so interesting.

The X-Men are not just another superhero team.

They come with decades of characters, villains, friendships, rivalries and some of Marvel Comics’ biggest stories.

Cyclops.

Jean Grey.

Storm.

Rogue.

Emma Frost.

Mister Sinister.

And that is barely scratching the surface.

Marvel could build years of movies and television stories around mutants alone.

But Professor X will probably be one of the characters holding that world together.

Whoever plays him has to convince audiences that this is someone mutants would trust, follow and sometimes completely disagree with.

Because Charles Xavier is not supposed to be perfect.

Some of the best X-Men stories happen precisely because his students challenge him.

The Biggest Challenge May Actually Be the Fans

Marvel also has another problem.

X-Men fans already know what they like.

Some grew up with Patrick Stewart.

Others grew up with James McAvoy.

Some want costumes that look straight out of the comics.

Some want something completely new.

And comic fans will absolutely have opinions about Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, Jean Grey and basically every mutant Marvel introduces.

That is why McAvoy’s advice matters.

Trying to recreate what worked before could be the safest move.

It could also be the most boring.

The new X-Men need to feel familiar enough that longtime fans recognize the characters — but different enough that we're not simply watching another version of movies we've already seen.

Marvel doesn’t need another Patrick Stewart.

It doesn’t need another James McAvoy.

It needs its own Professor X.

And the same should be true for the entire X-Men team.

Give Cyclops a chance to actually lead.

Let Storm be one of Marvel's most powerful heroes.

Explore the complicated relationship between Xavier and his students.

And please — after all these years — give the X-Men a world big enough to show why mutants became one of Marvel's greatest franchises.

The pressure is definitely there.

But sometimes pressure creates diamonds.

Now Marvel just has to make sure it doesn't burst the pipes first.
