Google has revealed the top 10 trending video games of 2025, which come with some surprising picks, especially the #1 spot, as it involves a latecomer to the gaming calendar.

Many assumed that Grand Theft Auto 6 was going to be the biggest title of 2025, but it got delayed to 2026. This left a vacuum that was filled by some surprising titles, with indie games and AA titles stealing the spotlight, becoming some of the best-selling media of the year.

It’s surprising to see ARC Raiders top the list, considering how it came out in the year. Then again, it’s a game with a ton of loot and potential strategies for survival, so there’s going to be a lot of people looking for guides.

Interestingly, while many of the top trending games were nominated at 2025's The Game Awards, some titles, like Pokémon Legends: Z-A, didn't receive nominations at all, and ARC Raiders failed to score a Game of the Year nomination. Clearly, critically acclaimed games aren't always the titles that get the most attention.

Another surprising entry on the list is Strands, a search term that doesn't refer to 2025's Death Stranding 2. Strands is a puzzle game in The New York Times library that's a variation on a word search, with new puzzles available daily.

While many of 2025's top trending games were expected, it's surprising that games like Hades 2, Dispatch, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and Hollow Knight: Silksong didn’t make the list. They’re all critically acclaimed games with a ton of fan support, yet they couldn’t beat out mainstays like Minecraft.

It’s also shocking that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 didn’t make the list, which adds further fuel to the rumors of it not doing well in sales, especially when titles Battlefield 6 and ARC Raiders are eating its lunch.

These results just go to show how much the gaming industry has been upturned in 2025. It's become a medium where any game can become a hit with enough fans, and that means that titles that used to be mainstays may struggle to get attention.

It's safe to assume that several of these titles, including Roblox and Grand Theft Auto 6, will be in Google's top trending games of 2026, but this year makes it clear that there may also be a few surprises.
