#FireJamesGunn Trends Following Henry Cavill's Superman Cancellation

DC fans have started a revolt against new DC Studios head, James Gunn, over the cancellation of Henry Cavill's Superman return.

Per Movieweb, Two hashtags began to trend on Twitter following the news that Gunn had cancelled plans for Cavill's Superman, with #BringBackZackSnyder and #FireJamesGunn dominating social media since the news broke last night. Rather than bring back Cavill's popular turn as the Man of Steel, Gunn announced his work on a Young Superman story that revealed the hero's early years, which meant removing The Witcher star from the role. This comes just months after Cavill confirmed his return following a cameo appearance in Black Adam's end credits.

DC Suffers Fan Backlash Over Recent Decisions

Almost as soon as the reveal came, DC fans began to express their outrage over Gunn's decision on Twitter. Many pleaded with the new DC Studios head to reconsider, while others called into question Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran's plans for DC Studios. This comes amid several major shakeups as the pair completely rebuild the DC film universe, including axing Wonder Woman 3 -- a report that also claimed Cavill would not return as the Man of Steel.

Shortly after Gunn's announcement that DC would move forward with a new Superman, Cavill confirmed his exit in a post on Instagram. "I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it's sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life," he wrote. "The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes."

Fans Rally to Cast Henry Cavill in Marvel and More

The recent news also led to fans calling for Cavill's reinstatement as Geralt in Netflix's The Witcher series. Some fans speculated that his departure from the show related to his return to Superman, and Gunn's announcement caused many to express hope for his return. Marvel fans even joined in, rallying for Cavill's casting as Marvel's Superman-esque hero Hyperion.

Since revealing the cancellation of Cavill's return, Gunn has not released more details about when fans can expect further news on his Superman reboot.
