A Forgotten DCEU Character From a 39% RT Bomb Is Rumored to Return

One of the easiest ways to get an argument going amongst DC fans is to bring up the Black Adam movie. You'll instantly see two things happen simultaneously amongst the crowd: faces light up with memories of a film they think was unfairly bashed by critics and fans, or faces turn to scowls ready to reinvigorate their disdain for it; but there's at least one thing nearly everyone can agree on, and that's the fact Pierce Brosnan was superb in debuting Dr. Fate to the masses before Superman reset the universe.

Unfortunately for Brosnan, whose list of acclaimed projects could wrap around the Earth twice, most famously known for his version of James Bond — more recently for Black Bag, The Unholy Trinity, Mobland and the upcoming Giant film — the Black Adam film bombed at the box office, critically and to many who viewed it and, as such, the sequel was scrapped as the original helped bury the DCEU for good before James Gunn took over to reboot it as the DCU. And that means Dr. Fate was buried with it ... or was he??

Despite Dr. Fate's self-sacrifice in Black Adam to buy time while he telepathically spoke to The Rock, who portrayed the powerful anti-hero, in the underwater prison to beseech his services against the demon Sabbac, there was always an avenue and a chance Brosnan would don the helmet again in the future of the franchise, something he confessed to GQ recently. Alas, it was not to be, and Brosnan isn't exactly one who needs to chase the role.

"I’ve never banged down anyone’s door. I mean, they know where to find me."

Leave It All to Fate

What's more important here is the fact Brosnan acknowledged there were talks for Dr. Fate to potentially have a franchise of his very own, of some sort, but also that, and this is where it truly gets interesting for DC Comics fans, that he might appear in Gunn's sequel to 2025's Superman, titled Superman: Man of Tomorrow, where the rumored villain is said to be the ultra-powerful Brainiac — willing to reprise the role if he were to ever get the call.

"I’ve heard that Dr. Fate was going to have his own show, or his own movie. I’ve heard that he’s going to be in the next Superman. I enjoyed that, the philosophy of that character, very much, and I would definitely be open to it."

That is at very promising news, far more so than what The Rock, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot or even Zachary Levi have received from Gunn and DC Studios, the latter recently defending Shazam! Fury of the Godsagainst all comers and also stating his willingness to return as the beloved hero. The door is officially open, per Brosnan, for both the return of Dr. Fate as idealized by Gunn, and for his portrayal of one of DC Comics' most powerful and arc-altering heroes, but the future of it all will ultimately be left to ... you guessed it ... Fate itself.

Black Adam is currently streaming on HBO Max.
