An unexpected mutant hero has just assembled a similarly unexpected X-Men lineup.

X-Force #10 opens to the sight of the eponymous team having been completely overrun by the might of La Diabla and her superpowered allies. Before a surprisingly villainous Colossus can put any of his former allies' lives to their end, however, the cavalry arrives to even the odds. Apart from a well-timed appearance from John Wraith, an entire other team of mutant heroes heeded the call of battle. Better yet, there is almost nothing that Sage's team of Cyclops, Beast, Havok, and Angel can't handle.

Though she had been glimpsed at the outset of the latest X-Force run, the villainous La Diablawouldn't make her first full appearance until the series' sixth issue. Prior to her career as a supervillain, Corazon Estrada was a scientific prodigy who earned multiple PhDs before reaching her twenties. After faking her own death, Estrada began using her knowledge of alchemy and science to wreak havoc under the guise of La Diabla. Since making her presence known, it has become clear that La Diabla is personally responsible for many of the near-catastrophes that Forge's X-Force has faced in the past year.

The current lineup of X-Force was formed by Forge following the war against Orchis and the end of the Krakoan Era. With the fall of Krakoa, Forge became more and more concerned with preemptively tackling cataclysmic events rather than simply reacting to them. To that end, he created a device known as the Analog, which can key him in to potentially devastating crises before they reach the point of doing irreparable harm. Unfortunately, the Analog is in no way capable of cluing anyone in to the specifics of those potential crises, nor how high the stakes of them truly stand.

This lack of specific information has already proven to be utterly devastating for X-Force with the loss of teammate Surge. Although the mutant speedster-turned-dynamo was never intended to become a part of Forge's team, she still managed to find a place for herself on its roster after unexpectedly joining them for a daring mission. In a tragic turn, Surge was forced to sacrifice her own life in order to save the Nexus of All Realities from being torn asunder by a rampaging Nuklo. In the wake of Surge's death, that particular tragedy has been held against Forge personally by fellow mutant hero and teammate Sage, who has found herself caught in the middle of an entirely different kind of crisis since taking her leave of X-Force.

X-Force #10 is available April 23 from Marvel Comics.
