A Stacked Lineup Gets Two More Nintendo Classics
Taking it Back to Where it All Began
Nintendo unveiled the new games coming to the Nintendo Switch Online subscription, and in keeping with the theme of Mario Day on Mar. 10, one of the most influential games in the mustachioed plumber's history was included. Released in 1994 for the Game Boy, Donkey Kong is one of the most acclaimed titles for the company's first handheld console, not only for its excellent level design and gameplay mechanics but also for its fresh take on Mario's first adventure.
While the game begins as another iteration of the classic confrontation between Jumpman and the iconic monkey to save Pauline, it doesn't take long to reveal an all-new adventure with more than 100 levels. Unlike the classic game, in which Mario can only jump and use hammers, this time Super Mario Bros. 2 mechanics and even acrobatic maneuvers are mixed in to guide the hero through the buildings of a big city. As if that weren't enough, Donkey Kong Jr. will appear from time to time to help his dad with his evil deeds.
Several of the mechanics and level designs introduced in this installment were the inspiration for a spiritual sequel known as Mario vs. Donkey Kong for Game Boy Advance. This spin-off series experimented with more puzzle-oriented controls and real-time strategy. A remake of the first game was released for Nintendo Switch in Feb. 2024, with updated graphics and a local multiplayer mode with Toad as a second character.
On the other hand, the other game coming to the subscription is Mario's Picross, a puzzle title in which players can reveal a picture by figuring out which squares to break on a grid. Despite a mixed reception, this would be the first game in a fairly successful series of puzzle games in Japan that is still going strong in that country. The most recent installment of the series in the Western market is Picross S9 for Nintendo Switch.
These two games join the list of retro games available on Nintendo Switch after the arrival of Wario Land 4 for Game Boy Advance last Feb. 14. On the other hand, the news of the removal of a classic game for the Super Nintendo in the Japanese subscription has worried some users about the possibility of more titles disappearing over time.
