Why Baby Yoda's Mandalorian Season 3 Lightsaber Is Yellow - and What It Means

The Mandalorian's Season 2 finale showed the completion of Din Djarin’s season-long quest. With the appearance of Luke Skywalker on Moff Gideon’s ship, Din Djarin finally returned Grogu to a Jedi. Together, Luke and Grogu will train in the ways of the Force as Luke seeks to rebuild the Jedi Order. However, unlike Luke or Yoda, Grogu’s lightsaber is yellow.

As part of the Comic-Con@Home 2021, Trends International released a new The Mandalorian poster entitled “Size Matters Not.” It shows Luke Skywalker alongside Grogu, his new Padawan. Luke is in his Jedi robes and levitating a glowing, yellow Kyber crystal, while Grogu is levitating various lightsaber parts.

After the finale, Din Djarin has new problems of his own to solve surrounding Bo-Katan and the Darksaber. Because of that and because The Mandalorian has primarily been centered around what Din Djarin is doing, some fans have hypothesized that Grogu and Luke will not be in Season 3 very much. However, with the release of this poster, it seems fans won’t have to wait too long to see what Skywalker and his little apprentice are up to. Even if they are not the focus of Season 3, their whereabouts should be addressed to some extent.

It is worth noting that the poster gives every indication that Grogu's lightsaber will be yellow as he trains with Luke. Most lightsabers in Star Wars are blue, green or red, but this would not be the first instance of a Jedi using a yellow lightsaber. Other Jedi to use a yellow blade in Disney’s canon include the Jedi temple guards, Luke for a brief period and Rey at the end of The Rise of Skywalker. So, while it’s not unheard of for someone to use a yellow lightsaber, it’s definitely unusual and means something for the character.

In Star Wars, lightsabers are powered by Kyber crystals. Each Jedi connects with a particular crystal and imbues their Force energy into it, which turns the crystal from its original clear appearance to another color. However, each Kyber color means something different and communicates its user’s stance in the Force. There is not a lot of clarity on yellow lightsabers in Disney’s canon, but traditionally, the color yellow is associated with a class of Jedi called a Jedi Consular. According to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, a Jedi Consular seeks to “strike a balance between the physical and mental disciplines of the Jedi Order.”

Yellow lightsabers have also been associated with Grey Jedi in Star Wars Legends. A Grey Jedi is someone who seeks to use a balance between the light and dark sides of the Force. While Disney has distanced itself from this idea in canon, it's still a viable option and could be re-canonized. In fact, this would make a lot of sense for Grogu because of his tumultuous past. He has seen and felt darkness. Although he survived, Grogu experienced the Jedi Purge, and he has been hunted for decades. He is also no stranger to using the dark side, as he displayed when he Force-choked Cara Dune, but he has also used the light side while Force-healing Greef Karga. In that regard, maybe Grogu will be Disney’s way of introducing Grey Jedi. Regardless Grogu’s yellow lightsaber is a visual representation of everything that he has been through in his life.
