Tony Stark Upgrades Iron Man Armor in What If...? Season 2

The What If...? Season 1 finale was one to remember -- the Guardians of the Multiverse were formed, the premise for Season 2 was established, and Tony Stark changed up his Iron Man look.

Episode 9 "What If... the Watcher Broke His Oath?" of Marvel's animated anthology series What If...? featured a scene that confused many at the time. At one point, the Watcher stops by an alternate universe where Gamora is putting on Thanos' armor, and Iron Man is sporting a different suit altogether. Thus, the show hinted at a new version of Stark that viewers might see in Season 2. Now, Hot Toys has seconded that motion by releasing an Iron Man figure in Sakaarian armor.

Stark's upgraded suit (both on What If...? and the Hot Toys figure) is reminiscent of the Transformers' look -- it is much bulkier than his previous armor iterations and might have extra space for new weaponry that Tony can install on Sakaar (according to a fan theory). This Iron Man collectible was originally supposed to be released in time for the show's Season 1 as part of its marketing, but COVID-19 interfered.

Bradley also teased of What If...? Season 2, "Everyone's going to be surprised by the way Gamora gets that [Thanos'] armor and how her relationship with Tony evolves," finishing off with a hopeful statement, "So, it will be a fun universe to see, hopefully, next year, and I think you found the silver lining there. It is a promise of more stories to come."

There is a fan theory that Tony has just built the new armor with some scraps on Sakaar, considering that it is established as "a trash planet" created by the Grandmaster. If that turns out to be true, it would serve as a nice reminder of Stark's resourceful roots -- after all, it would not be the first time that he created a suit out of nothing.

What If...? Season 2 is rumored to be released in 2024.
