Marvel fans are mocking a popular theory that suggested that Tom Cruise would join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Superior Iron-Man in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Following the debut of a recent TV spot for the highly-anticipated blockbuster which confirmed that the widely-discussed glowing character highlighted in previous trailers appears to be a Captain Marvel variant, fans are poking fun at the Superior Iron-Man rumors. Many are pointing to the stark visual difference between Cruise and the currently unknown actor set to appear in Multiverse of Madness. While the identity of the entity is unknown, many suspect it to be a previously unseen version of Monica Rambeau, who joined the MCU in WandaVision.
Rumors regarding the potential MCU debut of Superior Iron-Man have swirled for months despite key members of the Multiverse of Madness creative team warning fans to brace themselves for disappointment. "As you saw in Spider-Man: No Way Home, some rumors ended up being true, some did not," said Multiverse of Madness producer Richie Palmer. "I would love to see Tony again, but some rumors are just rumors."
While fans' hopes that Cruise would join the MCU in Doctor Strange's upcoming adventure have been dashed, Multiverse of Madness is still set to feature plenty of iconic Marvel characters. Highlighted in another recent TV spot, the film will see Captain Carter making her live-action debut. Originally appearing in the What If...? animated series, voiced by Hayley Atwell, the multiversal super solider will seemingly join the Master of the Mystic Arts on his arduous journey.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will serve as a direct sequel to both 2016's Doctor Strange and 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home. After tampering with the multiverse to help Peter Parker regain his secret identity, Benedict Cumberbatch's iconic wizard must face the consequences of ripping down the barriers between universes.
Speaking about how the film will continue Doctor Strange's character arc, Cumberbatch says the ex-Sorcerer Supreme has a tough road ahead of him. "There's a lot of reckoning," said Cumberbatch. "And a lot of self-discovery. Strange is almost a stranger to himself before this film unfolds and reveals what, essentially, is in his nature, that he then has to either confront or resist or fall into or become."
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6.
