This week, The Mandalorian and Grogu brings Star Wars back to theaters for the first time in seven years, with Din Djarin and Grogu making the jump from Disney+ to the big screen. But before Mandalore became one of the coolest corners of the galaxy, its roots go way back to Marvel’s Star Wars comic run. — but Mandalore’s story started in a much smaller place: Marvel’s Star Wars #68.
In that comic, set between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Princess Leia and C-3PO travel to Mandalore while searching for Han Solo. There, Leia runs into a Mandalorian warrior she first thinks is Boba Fett — but he’s actually Fenn Shysa, a leader fighting back against Imperial control.
In Star Wars #68, fans first got the name Mandalore and met Fenn Shysa, a Mandalorian warrior whose story painted a very different version of the Clone Wars than what fans know today. Some of that lore was later retconned, but it shows how Star Wars history was still being built in real time.
The issue gave fans the first real mention of Mandalore, even though some of its Clone Wars history would later be changed. Still, it planted the seed for what became one of the most popular parts of Star Wars lore.
And now? Mandalorians are carrying the franchise back to theaters.
