Star Wars; The Acolyte Episode 7 Included Major Last Jedi Connection No One Noticed

Eagle-eyed fans have noticed a major reference to Star Wars: The Last Jedi in episode seven of the latest live-action series set in a galaxy far, far away, The Acolyte.

As pointed out by The HoloFiles, episode seven of The Acolyte uses the "Rashoman effect," which is a filmmaking technique also seen in the crucial flashback sequences between Luke and Ben Solo in Rian Johnson's Episode VIII. In the new episode of The Acolyte, titled "Choice," the plot device named after the classic Akira Kurosawa film Rashoman can be seen as each character recalls a past event differently.

The Rashomon effect can be seen in The Acolyte when Mae recalls the events of the night her home was destroyed, along with the death of her mother, very differently from Jedi Master Sol. As the episode revealed, Mae didn't burn down the village, at least not intentionally, and she did her best to try to stop the fire from engulfing her home. Osha's belief that the Jedi saved her and did their best to do the same for her family is also proven inaccurate, as Master Indara was responsible for the death in the coven and Sol was willing to sacrifice Mae to save her sister. As stated, this effect is also seen in The Last Jedi, where Luke recalls Ben Solo becoming engulfed in darkness and destroying his Jedi temple, whereasAdam Driver's character remembered the events as his uncle attempting to kill him in his sleep. This plot device is also seen in films like Gone Girl, Knives Out, and The Last Duel.

Osha and Qimir Reflect Rey and Luke in The Last Jedi

The Rashoman effect isn't the only parallel that The Acolyte has to The Last Jedi. The relationship between Osha and Qimir mirrors that of Rey and Luke in the sequel trilogy in that both meet on an ocean planet with green islands that is strong with the Force. As well as that, Qimir acts as the invert of Luke Skywalker, as he turns away from the Jedi, encourages his apprentice not to believe the lies spread by the group, yet embraces the dark side in a way that Luke doesn't. Osha can also be described as an invert of Rey, as she looks set to turn to the dark side, but she actively questions the Jedi's lack of empathy in the same way that Daisy Ridley's character did.

Fans don't have long to wait to see the conclusion of The Acolyte, which may yet continue with another season on Disney+. Everything is finally poised in the story, as Osha and Qimir grow closer and Sol's life increasingly looks to be in danger.

Star Wars: The Acolyte is streaming now on Disney+.
