Secret Invasion Series Premiere Ends With [SPOILER]’s Death
The following contains spoilers for Secret InvasionEpisode 1, "Resurrection," now streaming on Disney+.
Former S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury lost a close friend and trusted ally in the closing moments of the Secret Invasion series premiere.
Maria Hill, portrayed by Cobie Smulders, was seemingly killed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series' first episode, "Resurrection." The fan-favorite character was on a mission with Fury and Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) to stop a group of rebel Skrulls from detonating bombs and starting a war between Russia and the United States. After failing to stop the bombs from going off, Hill is shot by the rebel Skrulls' leader, Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), disguised as Fury. As "Resurrection" fades to the credits, the episode leaves viewers with one last shot of Hill's lifeless body.
Smulders first appeared as Maria Hill in 2012's Marvel's The Avengers, where she was a high-ranking agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. who worked closely with Fury and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg). She then reprised the role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), as well as in multiple episodes of ABC superhero drama series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and the animated Disney+ series, What If...?. She also portrayed a Skrull disguised as Hill in Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019).
What Are Skrulls?
Skrulls are shapeshifting green-skinned extra-terrestrials that first appeared in Fantastic Four#2, published by Marvel Comics in 1962. They were created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby and have the ability to perfectly simulate any human being at will. Skrulls were introduced into the MCU in 2019's Captain Marvel. Secret Invasion, based on the popular 2008 Marvel Comics storyline of the same name, follows Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) as he "learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls."
Who Stars in Secret Invasion?
In addition to Jackson, Mendelsohn and Smulders, Don Cheadle and Martin Freeman reprise their roles from previous MCU media as James "Rhodey" Rhodes and Everett K. Ross, respectively, in Secret Invasion.
