The first film trilogy for Tom Holland's Spider-Man saw the web-slinger interact with various heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, something Marvel Studios and Sony are reportedly interested in seeing continue for the character's upcoming fourth solo film, Spider-Man 4.
According to film scooper Daniel Richtman (via ComicBookMovie.com), Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) are reportedly the two heroes Marvel and Sony want to see in Spider-Man 4.Richtman notes that Daredevil currently has a "sizable role" in the current Spider-Man 4script while Ant-Man's involvement is merely a "current idea." If the pint-sized hero does appear, he would take on a mentor role similar to the one Iron Man and Doctor Strange had with Holland's Peter Parker.
The MCU's Spider-Man is no stranger to working with other heroes given that his introduction to the shared universe was in Captain America: Civil War, which saw the Avengers split into two factions over the controversial Sokovia Accords. When the time came for Spider-Man's first solo film, 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming, Robert Downey Jr. appeared in a small role as Tony Stark/Iron Man, offering the young hero some key words of advice. For 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home, Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury was the MCU guest star, sending Peter Parker on an Avengers-level mission during his school trip to Europe. Doctor Strange and Wong were the latest MCU heroes to team up with Spidey, appearing in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's respective Spider-Mans.
When Will Spider-Man 4 Begin Filming?
At the time of writing, Marvel and Sony have not officially announced when Spider-Man 4 will begin shooting. However, in October 2023, Richtman reported that the two companies were eyeing a late 2024 production start. He also revealed that Jon Watts is expected to return as director after helming the first MCU-set Spider-Man trilogy and that Zendaya will be back as Peter Parker's love interest Michelle Jones-Watson. As for Holland, he stated in November 2023 that he would only reprise the title role if Spider-Man 4 was "worth the while of the character," explaining that he doesn't want to "make another one for the sake of making another one."
Spider-Man 4 Rumored to Tie Into Daredevil: Born Again
While plot details for Spider-Man 4 remain under wraps, there have been rumors suggesting that the upcoming sequel will deal with the aftermath of the upcoming Disney+ series, Daredevil: Born Again, which features both Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin and Cox's Man Without Fear. MCU fans will, of course, remember that Daredevil previously crossed paths with Spider-Man in their civilian identities of Matt Murdock and Peter Parker in No Way Home. With both characters calling New York home, it makes sense that Marvel and Sony might want to have the characters team up against a common enemy. D'Onofrio recently teased that he believes only Daredevil and Spider-Man working together could successfully stop the MCU's Kingpin.
Spider-Man 4 does not have a release date.
