2025 was supposed to be an exciting year for Rachel Zegler, who officially became a Disney Princess in the new Snow White remake. However, the project was one of the most controversial recent releases, and the actress is now moving on.
Following the disappointing run of Snow White, which has been review-bombed and critically panned, with poor box office results, Rachel Zegler has found her new film. Per Variety, Zegler will star alongside Spider-Man's Marisa Tomei in the comedy drama She Gets It From Me. The two will play a mother-daughter duo.
The upcoming film has Julia von Heinz at the helm, who previously directed 2024's Treasure and Germany's 2021 Oscar submission And Tomorrow the Entire World. Jay Reiss (Tony Award-winning The Twenty Fifth Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, 2011's The Oranges) wrote the script. Embankment will launch global pre-sales in Cannes. She Gets It From Me will have 3311 Productions producing alongside Seven Elephants' Anna Werner, and Reiss.
Rachel always brings a brilliant depth and humanity to her roles.
The upcoming comedy drama is based on a true story. She Gets It From Me follows "Nicky (Zegler), whose engagement celebration turns into a search for her pill-popping, ex-punk rocker birth mother, Charlotte (Tomei). Together, the two embark on an anarchic mother-and-daughter journey to reconnect."
The logline reads, "YouTube is packed with tearful family reunions, but nobody films the messy aftermath."
She Gets It From Me's director shared in a statement, "The emotional truth of the movie, reflecting parts of all our lives, is truly funny, immersive cinema. Jay’s screenplay captures family dynamics at their most authentic: absurd yet profound, messy yet meaningful. The collision of two worlds creates comedy that cuts deep because it’s so honest."
Rachel Zegler Received High Praise From New Film's Producer
The actress gained recognition for her role in Steven Spielberg's West Side Story adaptation, which led to her winning a Golden Globe. The actress further expanded her career with a role in The Hunger Games franchise prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and most recently, Snow White.
Zegler received high praise from 3311 producer Jen Dana: "Rachel always brings a brilliant depth and humanity to her roles, and we are so excited for her to continue to showcase her versatility and humor as an actress."

Embankment’s Hugo Grumbar added, "What could be more fun than finding out your birth mother is the wonderful Marisa Tomei!" Tomei won an Oscar for her portrayal in 1992's My Cousin Vinny, and received two more nominations. Most recently, she played Aunt May in Marvel Cinematic Universe's new Spider-Man films.
Although Snow White was expected to become a major hit for Zegler, it was surrounded by controversy. The new Disney remake received backlash for Zegler's casting, who is a Latina, and the actress received harsh criticism over some of her comments about the original animated fairy tale. Zegler's support for Palestine, combined with Gal Gadot's history of supporting Israel, led to a huge political backlash, which ended in a major box office flop for the film, among other reasons. Snow White had a huge budget of almost $270 million, and only grossed $200.2 million worldwide, and is set to be a major loss for the House of Mouse.
She Gets It From Me doesn't have a release date yet.
