A new image from Amazon MGM Studios' upcoming Madden biopic shows Nicolas Cage and Christian Bale transforming into NFL legends. They will play John Madden and Al Davis respectively.
Entertainment Weekly shared the first image from the Madden biopic, which was announced in 2024. David O. Russell (American Hustle, Amsterdam) is set to direct, with other big names set to star. Madden will focus on the NFL coach and commentator's career, including the popular John Madden Football and Madden NFL video games. The first look at the film shows Cage and Bale in character, standing in a football stadium with their Super Bowl rings on full display for the camera.

"The film follows Madden’s remarkable journey -- from his Super Bowl-winning partnership with Al Davis and the Raiders, to creating Madden NFL, and becoming one of the most iconic voices in football history," Amazon MGM said in a press release. Madden's career saw him serving as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1969 to 1978.
He holds the highest winning percentage among NFL head coaches who coached at least 100 games, remarkably never having a losing season. At the end of the 2024 season, he furthered his victory with the most wins as head coach in Raiders history with an impressive 103 wins. Outside of coaching, he has served as a commentator for NFL telecasts, winning 16 Sports Emmy Awards, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
Al Davis, who will be portrayed by American Psycho icon Christian Bale, was a former owner of the Raiders and a close friend of Madden's. He was the general manager of the team for 39 years, from 1972 up until his death in 2011. He was known for his "Just win, baby" motto and was also inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992.

Kathryn Hahn and More Appear in Madden Biopic
While Cage and Bale are the leads for Amazon MGM's Madden, the supporting cast includes comedian John Mulaney as tech entrepreneur Trip Hawkins, Sienna Miller as Davis's wife, Carol, and Kathryn Hahn as Madden's wife, Virginia. Hahn is known for her role as Agatha Harkness in WandaVision and its spin-off, Agatha All Along.
The Madden film will join a growing number of blockbuster movies from Amazon MGM Studios, including the recent Ben Affleck movie The Accountant 2, and the Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick-led black comedy Another Simple Favor. The studio also recently took creative control of the James Bond franchise, with a new Bond film currently in development.
Madden does not have a release date at this time.
