The crew of the U.S.S. Protostar is looking for a new home. The 3D-animated Star Trek: Prodigy will not be getting a Season 3 - at least on Netflix, according to What’s on Netflix. The animated Prodigy featured the story of a crew of young aliens who work together after finding an abandoned starship. The series premiered in October 2021 on Paramount+ and later that year aired on Nickelodeon.

In 2023, Netflix picked up the series created by Dan and Kevin Hageman and confirmed a second season would be on the way. Season 2 began airing on the streamer last year. Now, it seems the streamer has said no to a new season, and its exclusive license to carry Seasons 1 and 2 is ending. Prodigy starred Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets) as Gwyn, Rylee Alazraqui as Rok-Tahk, Brett Gray as Dal, Agnes Imrie as Zero,K, and Jason Mantzoukas as Jankom Pog.It also featured the return of Voyager captain Kathryn Janeway, voiced by Kate Mulgrew.

In addition, Prodigy saw its fair share of guest stars throughout its short run including the return of Robert Beltran, voicing Voyager alum Chakotay, Robert Picardo reprising his role as the Holographic Doctor from Voyager, Gates McFadden as Beverly Crusher, and Wil Wheaton as Wesley Crusher, in their roles from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Other notable guest stars featured on Prodigy included John Noble (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King), Jameela Jamil (The Good Place), and Jason Alexander (Seinfeld).

More Bad News for Fans of the 3D Animated Prodigy

Not only will Prodigy not be renewed for a third season at Netflix, but the first two seasons are set to be removed from the streamer. The news comes even though the animated series, geared toward a younger audience, but adored by those of all ages, has a nearly-perfect 97% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Prodigy fans will have just over a month to watch Season 1. It will leave Netflix on June 24. Season 2 will hang out at the streamer a bit longer and will be removed on Jan. 1, 2026.

Kate Mulgrew Had Hoped for a Third Season

In August 2024, Mulgrew said she was hopeful that Prodigy would be renewed. “I’d like to see a third season. Let’s be very clear about that. I think it would be very interesting to follow this relationship with Janeway and Chakotay. And we also have The Doctor involved,” she said. “So, we’ve got two of my old pals, Robert Beltran and Bob Picardo. See where you can go with it. Perhaps I like tragedy. I like a little tragedy with my soup,” Mulgrew added.

There Were Plans in the Works to Bring in Kelvin Timeline Players

Prodigy co-executive producer and writer Aaron J. Watke last summer said he had big plans for a third season, which may have involved bringing in Chris Pine’s Kelvin Timeline Captain Kirk into the fray. “At one point, I think we had discussed the possibility of what other universes we can explore,” Watke told Screen Rant at that time. “And I think at one point, we talked about trying to bring in even the Kelvin universe, but we just simply didn’t have time in the ‘Cracked Mirror’ episode, where they’re going into all the different universes. And we were like, ‘Oh, what if we brought in that Captain Kirk, and he had to help them for a couple of episodes,” he said.

With the removal and quiet cancellation of Prodigy at Netflix, it remains to be seen if the series will be picked up by another network or streamer.

For now, the first two seasons of Star Trek: Prodigy are streaming on Netflix.
