Marvel Rivals Introduces Clone Rumble Bans, Much to Fans' Dismay

Writer: Aaron FonsecaAaron Fonseca

The developers of Marvel Rivals have really loved adding in limited-time game modes, and Clone Rumble is the most recent example of that fact. Clone Rumble is centered around pitting a team of one specific character versus a team of another specific character. For example, a match could see a team of six Captain America's facing a team of six Iron Man's. The only problem with the game mode is that Rivals very much wasn't balanced around this concept, which is why NetEase has taken steps to limit the meta.

For example, a match could see a team of six Captain America's facing a team of six Iron Man's. The only problem with the game mode is that Rivals very much wasn't balanced around this concept, which is why NetEase has taken steps to limit the meta.

The characters that have been banned in Marvel Rivals' new game mode, Clone Rumble, were clearly chosen for their technical abilities that either would have broken the game or made it nigh unplayable. The characters that are banned in Clone Rumble include:

  • Adam Warlock

  • Cloak and Dagger

  • Doctor Strange

  • Invisible Woman

  • Loki

  • Luna Snow

It is not surprising that this list is mostly composed of Strategists. Having to play against six players who could all keep the team up with their ultimate skill doesn't sound like a great time at all. As for Doctor Strange, he has probably been banned because too many portals might be too chaotic for the game.

It's a bit rash for NetEase to preemptively ban characters, but their sole concern is the fan experience. Fans of the game might be upset that they aren't getting the chance to even experiment in the first week of Clone Rumble, but the aforementioned characters absolutely would have dominated the game mode in a way that isn't conducive to fun. Waiting for six different healing ults to finish is not in the best interest for anyone.

Banning characters outright is always going to be a controversial move, but NetEase has almost certainly put the new Clone Rumble game mode through extensive playtesting. The developers have probably seen for themselves what a team of six Invisible Woman's is capable of. In the interest of fun, the best decision is to simply ban the characters before they can be a problem. The developers want Clone Rumble to be enjoyed. The meta might be more stale without all those strategists, but it is a lot more balanced. Even so, certain characters might still be too strong for the mode.
