Marvel Just Gave Thor the Powers of the Phoenix Force
The following contains major spoilers for Avengers Assemble: Omega #1 from Marvel Comics.
Thor debuts a new Phoenix Force-related superpower in Marvel's Avengers Assemble: Omega #1.
Avengers Assemble: Omega #1 comes from Jason Aaron, Aaron Kuder, Dexter Vines, Ivan Fiorelli, Javier Garrón, Jim Towe, Alex Sinclair and VC's Cory Petit. The final chapter in both the "Avengers Assemble" event and Aaron's run on the series, Avengers Assemble: Omega sees Earth's Mightiest Heroes assemble for one last climatic battle against Doom Supreme, Mephisto and the Multiversal Masters of Evil.
At one point during the battle, a massive dam holding back dark power bursts open and threatens to erase all space and time. Needing to stop the waters, Thor rushes to aid Echo, Old Man Phoenix and Firehair, the first human host of the Phoenix Force who also played a major role in Thor's recently redefined origin story. He then debuts a powerful Phoenix Fire blast erupting from his body and exploding through his hammer which successfully draws the dark power back. "The fire breathed into me the day I was born!" Thor calls out. "By my mother! The fire of the Mighty Thor! Son of the Thunderbird!"
Thor's Phoenix Force Connection Explained
While Thor isn't an official host of the Phoenix Force, 2022's Avengers 1,000,000 BC (2022) #1 (by Aaron, Kev Walker, Dean White and Petit) explained his connection to the cosmic entity. Avengers 1,000,000 BC (2022) #1 revealed Odin once had a romantic with Firehair (who also calls herself Lady Phoenix), who then went on to form the Prehistoric Avengers. Years later, Odin and Firehair's relationship had fizzled out and Odin married Gaea, who gave birth to Thor. Moments after his birth, however, Thor was very nearly killed by Frost Giants but was then saved by Firehair, who swooped in and breathed some of her fire into his lungs.
Following the conclusion of "Avengers Assemble," Marvel is giving Earth's Mightiest Heroes a new series in May 2023 from writer Jed MacKay and artist C.F. Villa. Along with Thor, the roster includes Captain Marvel, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Panther, Scarlet Witch and Vision. The synopsis for Avengers #1 reads, "The Star. The Icon. The Witch. The Construct. The God. The Engineer. The King. The world is ever in peril, and a new team of Avengers mobilizes to meet any dangers that dare threaten the planet. But when TERMINUS attacks, a new and insidious danger rears its head: one that the Avengers know all too well, and one that comes to them in the most dangerous of guises – that of a friend."
Avengers Assemble: Omega #1 features cover art by Kuder and Sinclair and variant cover art by Alex Ross, Stefano Caselli, Edgar Delgado, Steve Skroce and Jim Campbell. The one-shot is on sale now from Marvel.
