In 2004, Pixar released one of the most beloved superhero movies of all time with The Incredibles. Written and directed by Brad Bird, the animated film became an instant classic, blending comic-book action, family comedy, and sharp social commentary into one of Pixar’s most celebrated achievements.

Fourteen years later, Pixar returned to the Parr family with Incredibles 2. The long-awaited sequel became a major box office success, earning more than $1 billion worldwide and proving there was still huge audience demand for the super-powered family. Now, Pixar is preparing to bring the Parrs back once again with Incredibles 3, currently expected to arrive in theaters on June 16, 2028.

Pixar’s Incredibles 3 Brings a Big Behind-the-Scenes Shake-Up

The first two Incredibles films were closely tied to Brad Bird’s creative voice. Bird wrote and directed both movies, helping define the franchise’s mix of stylish superhero action, retro design, family drama, and thoughtful themes about individuality and society’s expectations.

That makes the biggest change for Incredibles 3 especially notable: Bird is not expected to direct the third film. He remains involved as the screenwriter and producer, but directing duties have shifted to Peter Sohn, who previously directed Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur and Elemental.

For longtime fans, that change may bring some concern. Bird’s fingerprints are all over the first two films, and his storytelling style helped make The Incredibles feel different from other animated superhero projects. At the same time, Bird’s continued involvement as writer and producer suggests that the new movie may still carry the same creative DNA that made the franchise work in the first place.

Bird is currently focused on his long-developing animated project Ray Gunn, which is expected to be released through Netflix. Because of that commitment, he will not be directing Incredibles 3 himself.

What Could Incredibles 3 Be About?

Plot details for Incredibles 3 remain under wraps. However, the ending of Incredibles 2 left the franchise in an interesting place. Superheroes had been legalized again, opening the door for the Parr family to operate more openly after years of hiding their powers.

That setup could allow the third movie to explore what life looks like for the family in a world where supers are no longer forced underground. It also gives Pixar room to expand the universe, introduce new heroes or villains, and further explore the balance between public heroism and private family life.

One of the strengths of the series has always been how it treats the Parrs as both superheroes and ordinary people. Bob, Helen, Violet, Dash, and Jack-Jack may have incredible powers, but the movies work because their struggles feel familiar. They deal with parenting, identity, insecurity, responsibility, marriage, adolescence, and the pressure to live up to expectations.

That mix of the extraordinary and the everyday is what helped make the original film so powerful.

Why The Incredibles Still Stands Out

Part of what makes The Incredibles so enduring is that it works on several levels at once. For younger viewers, it is a colorful, funny, action-packed adventure about a superhero family. For older viewers, it is also a clever look at talent, conformity, family roles, and what society does with people who are different.

The film has often been compared to Fantastic Four, and the connection is easy to see. Both stories center on a family of heroes with different abilities and clashing personalities. But The Incredibles succeeded by focusing less on superhero mythology and more on character. It made audiences care about the Parr family first, then made the action matter because of that emotional connection.

Incredibles 2 may not have reached the same critical heights as the original, but it still delivered a fun and stylish continuation. The sequel gave Helen Parr, also known as Elastigirl, a larger heroic role while Bob adjusted to life at home with the kids. It also expanded Jack-Jack’s powers and continued the franchise’s theme of balancing family life with public responsibility.

The sequel was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards, just like the original film, though it ultimately lost to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Can Incredibles 3 Live Up to the First Two Films?

The biggest question surrounding Incredibles 3 is whether the movie can maintain the spirit of the franchise without Bird directing. His writing and guidance should help, but direction matters, especially for a series with such a distinct tone and visual identity.

Still, Pixar has a strong foundation to build on. The Parr family remains one of the studio’s most beloved creations, and the first two movies have built up plenty of goodwill. If Incredibles 3 can recapture the franchise’s balance of heart, humor, action, and thoughtful storytelling, it has the potential to become another major win for Pixar.

Even if expectations are high, the appeal of The Incredibles has never faded. More than two decades after the original film, the Parr family still feels special because they are not just superheroes. They are a family trying to figure out who they are, what they owe the world, and how to protect each other along the way.

That has always been the real superpower of The Incredibles. Now, fans will have to wait and see if Incredibles 3 can live up to that legacy when it arrives in theaters in 2028.
