Deadpool 3 screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick teased how the film will approach being set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
A Post Cred Pod interview with Reese and Wernick recently surfaced on Twitter, in which the pair was quizzed on how an edgy character like Wade Wilson will work in the cleaner MCU. "It’s a wonderful opportunity for fish-out-of-water [comedy]," said Reese. "Deadpool is a lunatic at the center of a movie... To drop a lunatic into a very sane world, it’s straight butter. It’s going to be really fun."
Reese and Wernick previously spoke about how eager they are to lampoon the MCU in Deadpool 3, now that they have access to the fictional shared universe's sprawling roster of iconic heroes and villains. The screenwriting duo also revealed that Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019 wasn't something that factored into their creative process early on. "You know, it's never a marriage we necessarily saw coming -- Fox and Disney, that was an external thing [separate] from our storytelling process. But we're absolutely finding the serendipity and the gold in that situation, or we're trying to," said Reese.
Deadpool Under Disney
Reese and Wernick also assured fans that Deadpool 3 will maintain the franchise's raunchy tone, despite the production moving under the Disney umbrella. "Deadpool is gonna be Deadpool," Wernick promised, while Reese added that the studio currently supports the decision to keep the Merc with a Mouth's big-screen adventures adult-oriented. He went on to say that Disney had yet to request any changes to their scripts, either. "Now when it comes to a particular joke, if we cross a line, maybe we’ll hear at some point, 'Maybe not that joke.' But I think they’ve been incredibly supportive of what we’re doing," Reese explained.
The pair recently touched on Deadpool 3's lengthy production schedule, too. Reese and Wernick attributed the four-year gap (and counting) between the upcoming sequel and 2018's Deadpool 2 to their desire to deliver a truly great follow-up. They also hinted that integrating Deadpool into the canon of the MCU has made writing the script more difficult, as well. Despite these challenges, Reese and Wernick confirmed that they remain hard at work on Deadpool 3 and continue to make progress on the screenplay. "We're in the laboratory working on it with Ryan Reynolds all the time, and we're very much entertaining ourselves," Reese said.
Deadpool 3 does not yet have a release date.
