Daredevil: Born Again Star Says the New Series Will 'Surprise Everyone'

Daredevil: Born Again star Vincent D'Onofrio says the anticipated Disney+ series is going to take Marvel fans by surprise.

On Twitter, D'Onofrio offered a behind-the-scenes update on Born Again, revealing that the upcoming Daredevil reboot series hasn't started filming just yet, though is currently "deep" into pre-production. Regarding Born Again itself, D'Onofrio added that the show is "going to be very very cool. Very different than the Netflix show which as we know was amazing. Yet this is brand new and really smart. We are going to surprise everyone with it. And yes it's going to be really cool."

Everybody Wants to Be the King

D'Onofrio portrayed Wilson Fisk/Kingpin in all three seasons of Marvel's Daredevil, which ran on Netflix from 2015 to 2018. The Full Metal Jacket alum starred opposite series lead Charlie Cox, who portrayed main protagonist Matt Murdock/Daredevil himself. D'Onofrio's Kingpin served as the main antagonist of Daredevil Season 1. He acted as more of a secondary antagonist in Season 2 before once again becoming the show's big bad in Season 3.

In late 2021 -- three years after Netflix's Daredevil was canceled and its characters entered a state of limbo -- D'Onofrio finally reprised his role as the Kingpin in Marvel Studios' Disney+ original series Hawkeye, thus officially cementing the character as Marvel Cinematic Universe canon. Around that same time, Cox reprised his own role as Matt Murdock for a cameo in the MCU film Spider-Man: No Way Home.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige announced that Cox and D'Onofrio would once again reprise their respective roles for Daredevil: Born Again, which is slated to premiere on Disney+ in spring 2024 as part of Phase Five of the MCU. Born Again's first season has been given an 18-episode order, making it Marvel Studios' longest Disney+ series yet -- by a considerable margin. In addition to Cox and D'Onofrio, the Daredevil reboot will star Michael Gandolfini, Margarita Levieva, Sandrine Holt and Nikki M. James.

In the meantime, Cox recently reprised his role as Daredevil in the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, which aired in 2022 as part of Phase Four of the MCU. Both Cox and D'Onofrio are expected to pop up again in Marvel Studios' Disney+ series Echo, a spinoff of Hawkeye, which is currently targeting a late-2023 premiere as part of Phase Five. Cox is also confirmed to be voicing Daredevil in Marvel Studios' upcoming animated series Spider-Man: Freshman Year, with D'Onofrio reportedly attached to join him as the Kingpin.

Marvel Studios' Daredevil: Born Again is slated to premiere on Disney+ in spring 2024.
