Zelda’s 40th Anniversary Is Getting a Huge New Tears of the Kingdom Release

The Legend of Zelda is celebrating 40 years in 2026, and Nintendo isn't letting the anniversary pass quietly.

While plenty of attention is on what's coming next for the franchise, fans of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdomare also getting something special this fall: a massive new hardcover book dedicated to the mysteries, artwork and history behind the latest era of Hyrule.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Secrets of the Zonai arrives October 20, 2026, giving fans hundreds of pages of new material from one of Nintendo's biggest modern adventures.

And this isn't just another collection of screenshots.

Hundreds of Pages of Zelda Artwork and Lore

Secrets of the Zonai is expected to include roughly 300 pages of development artwork, sketches, design notes and concepts connected to Tears of the Kingdom and the world established in Breath of the Wild.

Fans will also get approximately 50 pages of new character illustrations.

But the biggest attraction for hardcore Zelda fans may be the book's 80 pages devoted to lore.

That section dives deeper into the history of Hyrule, the mysterious Zonai civilization and events surrounding the era of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

That's important because Zelda reference books have become a major part of how fans piece together the franchise's enormous mythology.

Books such as Hyrule Historia helped fuel years of discussion about exactly how the different Zelda adventures connect.

Now Secrets of the Zonai could do something similar for Nintendo's newest version of Hyrule.

There's Also a Hero's Edition

Collectors are getting another option.

A special Hero's Edition of Secrets of the Zonai will include several extras inspired by Tears of the Kingdom.

The package includes a cloth map of the Depths, a replica of the Secret Stone of Time, and an art print featuring Link.

That's going to make this one particularly tempting for Zelda collectors — especially with the release arriving right before the holiday season.

Zelda's Biggest Creative Names Are Involved

The project also has some major Zelda talent behind it.

Eiji Aonuma, Hidemaro Fujibayashi and Satoru Takizawa are contributing to the book, giving fans information directly connected to the creative team behind the games.

That could make Secrets of the Zonai especially interesting for players who spent hundreds of hours exploring Hyrule and still have questions about the Zonai, the ancient past and exactly how all of this fits into the larger Zelda universe.

Whether the next major Zelda adventure continues this world or starts completely fresh remains one of the biggest questions surrounding the franchise.

If Nintendo does decide to leave this version of Hyrule behind, Secrets of the Zonai could become something more than an art book.

It could serve as a final celebration of one of the most important periods in Zelda history.

Few video-game franchises have reinvented themselves as successfully as The Legend of Zelda.
