Transformers Celebrates 40 Years With a Light-Up Optimus Prime Popcorn Bucket

Four decades after The Transformers: The Movie arrived in theaters, fans have a new way to celebrate one of the franchise’s most memorable eras.

A special Optimus Prime light-up popcorn bucket has been released as part of the animated movie’s 40th anniversary celebration. Designed to resemble the head of the legendary Autobot leader, the collectible mixes movie-night fun with a heavy dose of Generation 1 nostalgia.

The bucket stands approximately 10 inches tall and features Optimus Prime’s unmistakable helmet design. Even better, his famous blue eyes actually light up, turning what could have been a simple popcorn container into something Transformers collectors may want to display long after the snacks are gone.

Optimus Prime Gets a Movie-Night Makeover

The collectible was created with longtime Transformers fans clearly in mind.

Beyond the Optimus Prime design itself, the packaging draws inspiration from the classic Generation 1 Transformers era, giving it the appearance of something that might have appeared on a toy-store shelf decades ago.

The top opens so the inside can be filled with popcorn, candy or other movie snacks, but its light-up feature makes the bucket work equally well as a display piece.

It arrives during a year filled with merchandise celebrating the 1986 animated movie. Other anniversary products have included figures and trading cards inspired by the original film and its characters. Target, for example, is also carrying a 40th-anniversary Optimus Prime Studio Series figure based on the movie.

For longtime fans, the anniversary carries special significance because The Transformers: The Movie remains one of the franchise's most talked-about installments.

The film famously shocked young audiences by killing Optimus Prime during his brutal confrontation with Megatron. What was originally intended in part to help introduce a new generation of Transformers toys became an emotional moment that fans continued discussing for decades.

The Anniversary Now Carries Even More Meaning

This year's celebration has also taken on a much more emotional tone following the death of Peter Cullen, the actor whose unmistakable voice defined Optimus Prime for generations.

Cullen died on August 26, 2026, at age 85. He first voiced Optimus Prime in the original 1984 animated series and continued returning to the role across television, animation and the live-action Transformers movies.

Hasbro remembered Cullen not simply as the voice of Optimus Prime but as someone who helped define the character's ideas of courage, compassion and leadership.

That makes a collectible celebrating the original Optimus Prime feel a little different this year.

What could easily have been just another novelty popcorn bucket has become part of a much larger celebration of the character, the 1986 movie and the performer whose voice helped turn Optimus Prime into one of pop culture's most recognizable heroes.

Forty years after The Transformers: The Movie, Optimus Prime is once again lighting up — this time literally — while giving longtime fans another way to remember an era of Transformers that continues to endure.
