The Muppets Are Crossing Over With Marvel in New Comic One-Shot

The Muppets are heading into the Marvel Universe this September with The Muppets Take the Marvel Universe #1, a new one-shot anthology celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Muppet Show.

The special issue brings together characters from both Marvel Comics and The Muppet Show for a chaotic crossover filled with humor, superhero action, and plenty of Muppet madness. While Marvel has published Muppets comics before, this new release may become one of the most memorable collaborations between the two brands.

The Muppets Bring Their Madness to Marvel

The Muppets Take the Marvel Universe #1 features several short stories that mix fan-favorite Muppets with some of Marvel’s biggest heroes. The creative lineup includes Chip Zdarsky, Pete Woods, Ashley Allen, MacKenzie Cadenhead, Kyle Starks, David Baldeon, Mike Henderson, Paco Medina, and more.

One of the main stories follows Rowlf the Dog after he is kidnapped by Mojo, who wants to use him to help launch a new streaming service. That leads Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Wolverine, Emma Frost, and several others into a wild rescue mission.

Another story brings Marvel science into Muppet Labs, as Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker welcome Bruce Banner and Hank Pym for an experiment involving Gamma Rays and Pym Particles. Naturally, with the Muppets involved, things are not expected to go smoothly.

The issue also includes a mystical adventure featuring Clea, Doctor Strange, and the Swedish Chef. When Clea becomes ill from a magical virus and Doctor Strange cannot find the cure, help comes from one of the most unexpected places possible.

A Perfectly Strange Crossover

Part of what makes this crossover so appealing is how naturally strange it feels. The Muppets have always thrived on chaos, comedy, and self-aware humor, while Marvel’s universe is full of heroes, villains, monsters, cosmic threats, and magical disasters. Putting those two worlds together opens the door for the kind of ridiculous stories that comic books can do especially well.

The project also arrives during a milestone year for The Muppet Show, making the timing even more meaningful. The one-shot follows Marvel’s recent Muppet-themed variant covers, which celebrated the franchise’s long history and popularity with fans.

Chip Zdarsky, one of the creators involved in the special, has spoken enthusiastically about getting the chance to write for characters like Kermit, Fozzie, Animal, Miss Piggy, and Deadpool. His excitement reflects the larger appeal of the project: this is not just a novelty crossover, but a celebration of two beloved pop culture worlds.

Could More Muppet Crossovers Be Coming?

For now, The Muppets Take the Marvel Universe #1 is planned as a one-shot. However, the idea of the Muppets crossing over with other comic book properties is not hard to imagine. Other major pop culture icons, including Godzilla, have recently appeared in a variety of comic book crossovers, and the Muppets have the kind of flexible comedy style that could work almost anywhere.

The Muppets Studio has also expressed excitement about bringing the humor and mayhem of the Muppets into Marvel’s world during the anniversary year. That kind of collaboration could leave the door open for more comic book adventures in the future.

The Muppets Take the Marvel Universe #1 will be available digitally through Marvel Unlimited on Sept. 23 and in print wherever comic books are sold.
