Spider-Man: Brand New Day May Have Revealed How Ned Can Remember Peter Parker

Spider-Man: Brand New Day begins a dramatically different chapter in the life of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. Following the devastating conclusion of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter lives in a world where Doctor Strange’s spell has erased everyone’s memory of him.

His friends no longer recognize him. His remaining family connections are gone, and even MJ and Ned Leeds have moved forward without knowing the important role Peter once played in their lives.

Peter initially believes that staying away from them is the only way to keep them safe. However, by the end of Brand New Day, he begins to understand that he was never meant to face everything alone.

That realization leads to one of the film’s most surprising moments.

Does Ned Remember Peter Parker?

During the final scene, Peter finally finds the courage to introduce himself to Ned. The two shake hands, but the ordinary introduction suddenly becomes something much more meaningful when Ned instinctively completes the secret handshake they shared before Doctor Strange’s spell.

Ned then says Peter’s name with a hint of recognition.

The movie ends before confirming exactly what happened. Did the handshake restore Ned’s memories, or did his body simply remember something that his mind had forgotten?

The moment leaves audiences with an enormous question that a future Spider-Man movie will eventually need to answer. It may also connect to a mysterious part of Ned’s story that began several years earlier in No Way Home.

No Way Home Suggested Ned Has Magical Potential

In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Ned gets possession of Doctor Strange’s sling ring. Although he initially struggles to use it, he quickly learns how to create portals.

His first successful portal brings Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man into the room. A second attempt summons Tobey Maguire’s version of the character. Ned later creates additional portals during the climactic battle at the Statue of Liberty.

His sudden ability to use the sling ring surprised many viewers. The first Doctor Strange movie showed that even Stephen Strange needed extensive practice before he could properly control the device. Ned, however, manages to create working portals after only a few attempts and without receiving any formal training.

The sequence was played largely for comedy, but it may have revealed something important about Ned. He could have a natural connection to magic similar to Doctor Strange, Wong and the other sorcerers trained at Kamar-Taj.

If Ned possesses some form of magical potential, Doctor Strange’s memory spell may not affect him in exactly the same way it affects an ordinary person. His memories could still be buried somewhere inside his mind, waiting for the correct emotional or magical trigger to bring them back.

Peter’s secret handshake may have provided that trigger.

The Handshake May Have Activated Ned’s Magic Before

One small moment in No Way Home makes the theory even more convincing.

When Ned first attempts to use the sling ring, he is unable to create a complete portal. He produces only a few sparks. However, one of his earliest signs of progress happens around the time he performs his familiar handshake with Peter.

That connection may have seemed insignificant in No Way Home, but Brand New Day gives it a possible new meaning. The handshake represents Ned’s emotional bond with Peter, even after the details of that friendship have been removed from his conscious memory.

Completing it again could have activated the same latent magical energy that helped Ned use the sling ring. If so, the final scene may show the first crack in Doctor Strange’s spell.

Ned may not remember everything immediately, but the memories of Peter could be starting to return.

Ned May Have Simply Discovered Spider-Man’s Identity Again

There is another possible explanation that does not require Ned to break Doctor Strange’s spell.

Earlier in Brand New Day, MJ accidentally calls the masked Spider-Man “Peter” after he leaves their apartment to visit Damage Control. Ned immediately reacts by asking if Spider-Man’s real name is Peter.

Ned has spent years trying to uncover Spider-Man’s secret identity, so hearing that name gives him an important clue. When he later meets a young man named Peter and instinctively completes a strangely familiar handshake, he may finally put the pieces together.

His reaction at the end of the movie may not mean that he remembers his former best friend. It could simply mean that he realizes Peter Parker is Spider-Man.

That interpretation would continue a running joke established throughout the MCU’s Spider-Man movies.

Spider-Man: Homecoming ends with Aunt May discovering Peter’s identity. Spider-Man: Far From Home concludes with the entire world learning that Peter is Spider-Man. No Way Home reverses the pattern by making everyone forget Peter Parker completely.

It would therefore be appropriate for Brand New Day to end with Ned discovering Spider-Man’s identity all over again.

The Secret Handshake Could Be Muscle Memory

The simplest explanation is that Ned completes the handshake through muscle memory.

Before Doctor Strange’s spell, Peter and Ned had probably performed the gesture hundreds of times. The magical spell may have erased Ned’s conscious memories of Peter without completely removing every physical habit created during their friendship.

Ned’s body could remember the movement even if his mind does not understand why it feels familiar.

This explanation may also be more emotionally meaningful than having a single handshake completely defeat Doctor Strange’s powerful spell. It suggests that Peter’s relationships with Ned and MJ have not been entirely destroyed.

The memories may be gone, but the emotional and physical traces of those friendships still exist.

Peter cannot restore the past exactly as it was. He may, however, be able to build new relationships with the people he once loved. Those connections could develop naturally because some part of Ned and MJ still feels comfortable around him.

The handshake becomes a symbol of hope. Peter may have been erased from their memories, but he has not been completely erased from who they are.

What Could This Mean for Spider-Man 5?

The ending creates several possible directions for the next Spider-Man movie.

A sequel will need to reveal whether Ned remembers Peter, has merely uncovered Spider-Man’s identity or is beginning to experience fragments of his lost memories. Each possibility could dramatically change his relationship with Peter.

The revelation could also bring Ned closer to his comic-book connection with the Hobgoblin. Although the comics’ history surrounding Ned and the Hobgoblin is complicated, the MCU could use his confusion, magical potential or feelings of betrayal to create its own version of that storyline.

Peter may desperately want his friend back, only to discover that restoring part of Ned’s past carries unexpected consequences.

The ending could also open the door for other characters to recover their memories. If Ned can recognize something from his former friendship, MJ may eventually experience similar moments. Their memories could return gradually through familiar places, phrases or emotions rather than through another enormous magical event.

That would allow Peter to rebuild his relationships without simply reversing the sacrifice he made at the end of No Way Home.

Spider-Man’s Future in the MCU

After the success of Brand New Day, another Spider-Man movie appears inevitable, even though Marvel and Sony have not officially detailed the next chapter.

The MCU will look very different by the time Peter returns. The continuing changes to the Marvel universe could provide opportunities for Spider-Man to interact more closely with characters such as the Fantastic Four.

Peter has a particularly strong connection with Marvel’s First Family in the comics. A live-action friendship and rivalry between Peter Parker and Johnny Storm could become one of the MCU’s most entertaining relationships. Peter’s scientific abilities could also create a natural bond with Reed Richards.

However, the emotional questions surrounding Ned and MJ should remain at the center of Peter’s story. Brand New Dayis ultimately about Peter learning that protecting the people he loves does not always mean removing himself from their lives.

Final Thoughts

The final handshake between Peter and Ned is a small moment with enormous consequences.

Ned may have used a hidden magical ability to break through Doctor Strange’s spell. He may have independently discovered that Peter is Spider-Man, or he may have completed the handshake through muscle memory without understanding its significance.

The movie deliberately refuses to provide an immediate answer.

Whatever the explanation, the scene suggests that Peter’s former friendships are not completely lost. Doctor Strange erased people’s memories of Peter Parker, but he may not have erased every feeling, instinct and connection those relationships created.

Peter cannot return to the life he had before No Way Home. He may finally have a chance, however, to build something new with the people who once knew him best.
