Forget chestnuts roasting on an open fire.

This Christmas, Spawn is heading to the North Pole — and things are about to get very bloody.

Image Comics has announced I Saw Spawn: A Twisted Christmas Tale, a new two-part holiday horror story that continues the twisted Christmas mythology introduced in last year’s I Saw Santa: A Spawn Universe Christmas Story.

Writers Chris Killian and Andrew Sanders return for the sequel, but this time Spawn will have a much bigger role as a murder mystery unfolds inside Santa Claus’ supposedly peaceful North Pole sanctuary.

The first issue arrives November 4, with the conclusion scheduled for December 9.

And yes — Todd McFarlane is getting involved with special cover artwork as well.

Something Is Very Wrong at the North Pole

The setup sounds like the kind of Christmas story only the Spawn Universe could deliver.

Bodies begin appearing around Santa’s isolated home, and nobody seems to know who — or what — is responsible.

Even worse?

There are questions about whether the killer might somehow be connected to Santa himself.

That’s when Spawn heads north to investigate.

What starts as a supernatural murder mystery quickly expands into something much darker, mixing Christmas folklore with the demons, monsters and supernatural horror fans expect from Spawn.

And things apparently get even crazier from there.

Santa Claws Is Coming to Town

The story continues ideas introduced in I Saw Santa, where the spirit of serial killer Charlie Kohl became connected to Santa Claus.

The result?

A murderous version of Saint Nick known as Santa Claws.

Now that evil presence appears ready to return, and Spawn may be the only thing standing between Christmas and a full-blown holiday massacre.

Safe to say this probably won’t be playing on the Hallmark Channel anytime soon.

Spawn Meets Todd McFarlane's Twisted Christmas

One of the coolest parts of the new story is that McFarlane’s famous Twisted Christmas toy line is also being pulled into the Spawn Universe.

That collection turned familiar holiday characters into bizarre horror creations, including monstrous snowmen, disturbing reindeer and twisted versions of classic Christmas characters.

Now those ideas may become part of Spawn continuity.

That potentially opens the door for even more strange holiday creatures to appear down the road.

And if you're wondering whether Krampus is involved?

According to the creative team, you should probably prepare yourself.

The Creators Promise an Even Bigger Christmas Nightmare

Killian says the original story initially didn’t even include Spawn because the writers weren’t sure they should touch Todd McFarlane’s signature character.

Then they got one very important note:

It needed more Spawn.

That led to the new sequel, which begins like a murder mystery before diving deeper into the stranger folklore side of the Spawn Universe.

Sanders says the team wanted to explore the darker side of Christmas and the secrets hiding behind the idea of keeping everyone “good.”

And apparently this sequel is going to be considerably bigger — and much more monstrous — than the first story.

His not-so-subtle tease?

Krampus.

Christmas Is Getting a Spawn Makeover

Holiday horror has become its own strange little tradition, and Spawn might be one of the characters best suited for it.

You’ve got Santa Claus.

Serial killers.

Krampus.

Supernatural murders.

And Spawn trying to figure out what exactly is happening at the North Pole.

That sounds like Christmas on Your Nerd Side.

I Saw Spawn: A Twisted Christmas Tale #1 arrives November 4, with the conclusion landing December 9.
