A new Nintendo collaboration with LEGO has been announced on social media, with the mighty Donkey Kongset to receive a blocky incarnation.

Nintendo has collaborated with LEGO on a number of occasions, with sets based on titles such as Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. There have also been separate collaborations with the Pokémon franchise, meaning Nintendo's biggest characters have been represented in the famous toy line, though some, such as the Star Fox cast, have yet to appear.

Donkey Kong LEGO Is On The Way

It was announced in a reel on the official LEGO Instagram page that a Donkey Kong set is on the way. The trailer only showed orange barrels rolling across the screen, and didn't provide any release dates or price points.

So far, there have been no leaks for this set, which is common with new LEGO content, so fans are completely blind as to what content will be featured in the Donkey Kong set. That said, now that it's been announced, a full reveal for the new Donkey Kong set shouldn't be far off.

It bears mentioning that Donkey Kong has appeared in LEGO form before, via expansions for the Super Mario Bros. sets. These included a Mario Kart vehicle and a tree house expansion featuring Kranky Kong. Those items are officially retired, however, and can only be purchased via the second-hand market.

What Will The Donkey Kong LEGO Set Contain?

The question now is what form the Donkey Kong LEGO set will take, given that he's already appeared several times in Super Mario Bros. content. The biggest clue comes from the teaser trailer, which showed barrels rolling across the floor, and nothing else.

Chances are, the LEGO set will be based on the 1981 Donkey Kong arcade game, in which he stood atop several platforms, holding Pauline hostage, and Jumpman/Mario had to ascend and save her. Donkey Kong was an enemy in this game, and his main weapon was throwing barrels at the player, which they could evade by jumping or smashing with a giant hammer, which still appears in the Super Smash Bros. series to this day.

If Donkey Kong is appearing in the set, then there's a chance Pauline will also appear, though she'll likely be in her modern form, as seen in Super Mario Odyssey, rather than her blocky counterpart from the original game. That being said, blocky character sprites are perfect for LEGO, so that older form may be revived. Whatever the case, it's likely that the Donkey Kong LEGO set will be a hot item, despite his absence from The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. and fans will have to be quick if they want to own one.
