M.A.S.K. Is Back: Matt Trakker Returns for a New Generation in the Energon Universe

One of the coolest action franchises of the 1980s is officially back in action.

M.A.S.K. — Mobile Armored Strike Kommand — has returned, bringing Matt Trakker, transforming vehicles, high-tech masks and the villainous V.E.N.O.M. into a new era of storytelling.

Image Comics is preparing to release M.A.S.K. Vol. 1: The Ultimate Weapon on January 6, 2027, collecting the opening six issues of the new comic series along with material from the Energon Universe 2026 Special.

For longtime fans who remember the original animated series and Kenner toys — or newcomers wondering what all the M.A.S.K. excitement is about — the collection could be an ideal place to jump aboard.

M.A.S.K. Joins the Energon Universe

This isn’t simply a nostalgic revival.

The new M.A.S.K. series has officially become part of Image Comics and Skybound's expanding Energon Universe, placing Matt Trakker's team in the same shared world as franchises including Transformers and G.I. Joe.

That opens the door to something fans of the original series could only imagine decades ago: M.A.S.K., G.I. Joe and Transformers potentially interacting within one connected storyline.

The series is written by Dan Watters, with artwork from Pye Parr.

At the center of the story is Matt Trakker and a worldwide network of specialists capable of responding to dangerous global threats at a moment's notice.

Naturally, they aren't traveling in ordinary vehicles.

M.A.S.K.'s signature machines can transform into heavily armed combat vehicles, while its agents use technologically advanced masks providing specialized abilities.

And waiting on the other side is Matt Trakker's classic enemy:

Miles Mayhem and V.E.N.O.M.

The evil organization is once again searching for dangerous technology and weapons — including discoveries that may extend far beyond Earth.

Matt Trakker Has More Than V.E.N.O.M. to Worry About

The new comic isn't relying only on battles, vehicles and nostalgia.

It's also digging deeper into the Trakker family.

Matt's son Scott Trakker is becoming increasingly important to the story, with upcoming issues suggesting that his relationship with his father could become one of the major conflicts driving the series forward.

Beginning around the fifth issue, Scott becomes increasingly caught in the battle between M.A.S.K. and V.E.N.O.M.

By M.A.S.K. #7, scheduled for December 2, 2026, Image's solicitation suggests that Matt could face serious questions about whether even those closest to him still trust his leadership.

The bigger question may eventually become whether Scott is simply Matt Trakker's son — or someone being positioned to become a major hero himself.

The First Major M.A.S.K. Story Reaches Its Climax

M.A.S.K. Vol. 1 will bring together the first major storyline of the reboot.

As the opening arc builds toward its sixth issue, V.E.N.O.M.'s threat becomes more dangerous and Matt Trakker is forced to confront both his enemies and the secrets threatening his own team.

The collection is expected to run 152 pages and carry a $16.99 cover price.

Cover artwork is planned from artists including Pye Parr, J. Scott Campbell and Tanya Lehoux.

Why the Return of M.A.S.K. Matters

For kids growing up during the 1980s, M.A.S.K. had almost everything.

Transforming cars.

Motorcycles.

Helicopters.

Futuristic masks.

Secret headquarters.

Heroes and villains with outrageous vehicles.

And, of course, one of those cartoon theme songs that somehow never completely leaves your brain.

The original animated television series debuted in 1985 and became closely tied to Kenner's popular toy line. Vehicles such as Matt Trakker's Thunderhawk became favorites because an ordinary-looking vehicle could suddenly reveal weapons, armor or another hidden configuration.

That combination helped M.A.S.K. stand alongside franchises like Transformers and G.I. Joe as part of the golden age of action cartoons and toys.

Now the Energon Universe gives the franchise an opportunity to become something more than a retro revival.

If Image and Skybound continue connecting these properties, Matt Trakker and his team could become significant players in a much larger universe.

And for longtime fans, seeing M.A.S.K., Transformers and G.I. Joe occupying the same comic-book world feels like the kind of crossover we would have dreamed about while sitting on the floor surrounded by action figures in the 1980s.

When Does M.A.S.K. Vol. 1 Come Out?

M.A.S.K. Vol. 1: The Ultimate Weapon is scheduled for release from Image Comics on January 6, 2027.

The collection will include the first six issues of the new M.A.S.K. comic along with material from the Energon Universe 2026 Special.

Meanwhile, the ongoing comic series continues releasing new chapters as Matt Trakker, Scott Trakker and the M.A.S.K. team prepare for an escalating battle against Miles Mayhem and V.E.N.O.M.
