James Gunn recently shared an exciting update about Peacemaker Season 2. He teased it as one of his "favorite things ever".
Writing on X (formerly Twitter), Gunn shared a video showing exciting footage from Peacemaker. John Cena can be seen in character as the show's titular character, giving a thumbs up to the camera before action-packed scenes flash by quickly. "Counting the days until Peace on Earth," Gunn said. "I just finished the DI & Mix on the Season Premiere yesterday and wow it's one of my favorite things ever." Peacemaker Season 2 will stream on Max August 21.
The first season of Peacemaker debuted in 2022 on HBO's Max streaming service as a spin-off from 2021's film, The Suicide Squad. It goes on to further explore the life of mercenary Christopher Smith / Peacemaker. While the first season was part of the DC Extended Universe, the second will be set in the DC Universe (a soft reboot of the DCEU created by Gunn and Peter Safran).
Cena is joined by Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Chukwudi Iwuji, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee and Robert Patrick in Peacemaker. The series boasted impressive viewership in its first season, with the finale recording a 44% higher number of viewers than its premiere. HBO also reported that the finale broke the record for highest single-day viewership of an HBO Max original episode, meaning the bar for Season 2 is incredibly high.
Season 1 of Peacemaker was also well-loved by critics, with a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Cena's performance was often deemed a highlight, with Gunn's writing also praised by critics. It's already been confirmed that Season 2 will continue the story, with Gunn writing and directing all eight episodes.
Peacemaker Season 2 Will Have a Brand New Theme Song

One thing fans of Peacemaker loved the most about the first season was the series' infectious theme song — but Gunn recently teased that the series would be opening a little differently when new episodes drop later this year. "I went through a lot of permutations of potential songs, that I was gonna have it open to, you know, including reusing, doing a different dancing to the 'Do You Wanna Taste It,' but then we ended up with something else that I think works," Gunn said.
He also talked about how Season 2 of Peacemaker will give fans a closer look at some of the show's characters. "I think it's the second season is much more about the characters and the interconnectivity between the characters and their personal lives, and it's more about Chris Smith than it is about Peacemaker, and so I think that the song reflects that, overarching theme."
Season 2 of Peacemaker is scheduled to hit Max on August 21.
