'I Knew The Fans Wanted It:' Hugh Jackman Reveals Why He Returned For Deadpool & Wolverine

Your Nerd Side with Fonseca our latest show:

Hugh Jackman has portrayed Wolverine in seven movies (nine, including his cameos in X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Apocalypse). After concluding the character's story in 2017's Logan, the actor was fairly sure he was done playing the role until he heard about Deadpool & Wolverine.

Speaking to Rotten Tomatoes alongside director Shawn Levy and his Deadpool & Wolverine co-star, Ryan Reynolds, Jackman explained what drew him back to the role. "I was on my way. I was just driving, and literally just like a bolt of lightning came this knowing, deep in my gut, that I wanted to do this film with Ryan, for Deadpool and Wolverine to come together," he said. "And I swear to you, when I said I was done, I really thought I was done."

"But in the back of my head, ever since I saw Deadpool 1, I was like, 'Those two characters together...' I knew it," Jackman continued. "I knew the fans wanted it. Ever since I put on the claws fans have talked about these two, so that had always been there, but I just knew. I literally could not wait to arrive. As soon as I arrived, I rang Ryan and I said, 'Let's do it.' Like, I hadn't rung my agent, no one. I had to ring my agent [after] and say, 'Oh, by the way, I've just committed to a movie.'"

A Jackman-Reynolds Team-Up Was In The Works For Years

Reynolds previously talked about Jackman returning as Wolverine despite his previous retirement. "Well, I mean, I think we all can now see that Hugh is a liar, you know?" the actor joked. "A bald-faced horrible coward and a liar. Here he is, back again. You'll have to find out how he comes back because that's one of the most fun aspects of the movie." Despite the humor, Reynolds had spent years trying to convince Jackman to join him in a team-up film for their characters.

Per the reported synopsis, Deadpool & Wolverine begins when "the Time Variance Authority (TVA), a bureaucratic organization that exists outside of time and space and monitors the timeline, pulls Wade Wilson / Deadpool from his quiet life and sets him on a mission with Wolverine that will change the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The cast includes Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, and Matthew Macfadyen.

Reprising their roles from previous Deadpool films are Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Stefan Kapicic as the voice of Colossus, Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, Randal Reeder as Buck; and Lewis Tan as Shatterstar. Returning actors from Fox-produced Marvel films include Aaron Stanford as Pyro and Jennifer Garner as Elektra Natchios. Additional characters include Dogpool, Sabretooth, Toad, Lady Deathstrike, and Azazel. Chris Hemsworth appears as Thor through archival footage.

Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters worldwide on July 26.
