Dark Horse Comics is about to kick off a whole new era for the Masters of the Universe.

Per a press release from Dark Horse Comics, the first chapter of the upcoming He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: The Sword of Flaws has set in motion a new story that could very well shake the entire franchise to its core. This four-issue limited series from all-star writer Tim Seeley and Eisner Award-winning artist Freddie E. Williams II not only features some of fans' favorite iconic characters, it introduces an all-new artifact imbued with a power that the eponymous Masters of the Universe can only begin to comprehend. The official solicit synopsis for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: The Sword of Flaws #1 from Dark Horse Comics reads, "A legion of Heroic Warriors protects the magical realm known as ETERNIA. They are led by TEELA: Captain of the Royal Guard, MAN-AT-ARMS: weapons master and combat instructor, and the powerful and heroic HE-MAN. These heroes, known as the MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, keep threats like the evil Skeletor and his minions at bay. But when an ancient and evil artifact is unearthed from the depths, the Masters of the Universe will have to scour the land in search of this Preternian power . . . or risk it falling into the hands of their greatest enemies."

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: The Sword of Flaws is the latest in a long line of comic book titles in the same franchise that have been released by Dark Horse Comics. Apart from the various titles that exist within the publisher's mainline Masters of the Universe line of comics, Dark Horse has also offered fans some truly unexpected crossovers with other iconic '80s properties. In 2024, Dark Horse and IDW Publishing teamed up to release Masters of the Universe/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles of Grayskull, which saw the Heroes in a Half Shell join forces with the Masters of the Universe to stave off the very real threat that emerges from Shredder and Krang's dark dealings with none other than the dreaded Skeletor.

On top of the hit comic book titles from Dark Horse, the Masters of the Universe franchise is set to expand out onto the silver screen courtesy of the upcoming feature film in the works from Amazon MGM Studios, Mattel Studios, and Escape Artists. The new Masters of the Universe film will star Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam Glenn, better known as He-Man, alongside a star-studded ensemble cast including Alison Brie, Jared Leto, Idris Elba, Camila Mendes, and Morena Baccarin.

Back in January, Galitzine pointed towards the comics and other, more recent iterations of the property as a potential source of inspiration for the upcoming film. "Look, what I will say is our version is quite different from the original animation, which we all agree was camp within its own right and worked so well for the time," Galitzine said at the time. "But there’s been a couple of iterations, obviously, since there was the Revelation version of Master of the Universe, and the comics themselves. And we’re very much treating our script as Bible, you know."

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: The Sword of Flaws is on sale now from Dark Horse Comics.
