Ghostbusters: Afterlife Sequel Reveals Setting, Working Title

The next Ghostbusters officially has a working title.

In celebration of Ghostbusters Day 2022, director Jason Reitman confirmed that the code name for the next mainline film is "Firehouse," teasing that that gang of paranormal hunters will be returning to a familiar locale. "The last time we saw Ecto-1, it was driving back into Manhattan: the home of Ghostbusters," Reitman said. "That's where our story begins. The code name is 'Firehouse.'" While story details remain scarce, fans believes that the sequel to 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife will once again take place in the fire station the original team used as a base of operations in the classic '80s films.

While the plot of the Afterlife sequel remains unknown, Reitman has peviously discussed when an iconic Ghostbusters villain could return to the franchise. "There is a lot of time and opportunity for Vigo the Carpathian to make his return," Reitman said. "Look, are you saying that's the only painting of Vigo the Carpathian? Maybe, he's riding a horse in another one, maybe, impaling someone in another one." The frightful spook served as an antagonist across several installments in the franchise, including Ghostbusters II, The Real Ghostbusters animated series and Ghostbusters: The Video Game.

The son of Ivan Reitman, who directed both Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II, Jason recently addressed his excitement for the franchise as a whole, noting his enthusiam to see it grow amongst different filmmakers. "I want to see Ghostbusters movies from all of my favorite directors. And we hope that [Afterlife] sets the table for that."

This wasn't the only major announcement to come out of the GhostbustersDay celebrations. Netflix confirmed that a new animated series based on the crew's adventures is currently in development with Reitman and Afterlife writer/executive producer Gil Kenan at the helm. There's currently no word yet on when the show will arrive nor which generation of the phantom fighting team will be represented. Beyond the animated show and the working title for the Afterlife sequel, Sony also unveiled two new virtual reality Ghostbusters games: Ghostbusters VR Academy and Ghostbusters VR (working title). Both of these games will release for the PSVR 2 and Meta Quest 2 headsets but official release dates were not specified.

The next Ghostbusters movies does not yet have a release date.
