Could Ryan Coogler Helm Avengers: Secret Wars? The Black Panther 2 Director Responds

There are many Marvel Cinematic Universe fans who have expressed their desire for Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverdirector Ryan Coogler to helm the upcoming ensemble film, Avengers: Secret Wars, the first of two planned Avengers films.

Speaking to Phase Zero for Wakanda Forever, Coogler was asked about the fan demand. When told, "The fans, the streets, that's what they want." The director responded, "What streets, bro? What are you talking about?" He went on to say, "I don't know nothing about that, man. I'm trying to finish this one."

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars were announced in July, with both scheduled for 2025. Secret Wars, however, was recently delayed, along with Blade, Fantastic Four and Deadpool. Where it was originally planned for Nov. 7, 2025, it will now premiere on May 1, 2026.

The film is still very much in its early stages, which means details are still scarce. However, it has been clarified that director Destin Daniel Cretton, who is attached to The Kang Dynasty, will not be helming Secret Wars. The script will be written by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron.

Both The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars will be included in Phase 6 of the MCU, with the latter capping off the ongoing Multiverse Saga. It is currently unknown which superheroes introduced throughout The Infinity Saga and Phase 4 will be included in the upcoming iteration of the titular Avengers. Out of the original team, only Hulk, Thor and Hawkeye remain in MCU.

There has been some speculation about what the upcoming film will bring, with even actor Mark Ruffalo chiming in about comparisons to the last epic ensemble film. In a previous interview, he said, "Well, it’s gonna be hard to top Endgame, but if I know [Marvel Studios President] Kevin [Feige] and if I know Marvel, it’s gonna be pretty amazing... It'll be a big bang, we'll go out with a big bang."

The next instalment of the MCU is the upcoming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which will introduce a number of new superheroes and characters, including Namor and the people of Talocan, Ironheart and, of course, a new bearer of the mantle of Black Panther. The film will be followed by Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which will debut a new variant of Kang, introduced in the finale of Loki Season 1.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is scheduled to be released on Nov. 11.
