The sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which premiered in 2023, is almost here. Titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the upcoming animated film has officially released the first trailer.

Two years after The Super Mario Bros. Movie crossed the $1 billion mark at the box office, Chris Pratt is almost back as the titular character, Mario. Peach, Luigi, and Toad are also back. At the same time, the trailer also introduces the fierce princess Rosalina, played by MCU's Brie Larson.

Brie Larson was confirmed to play Rosalina during the release of the trailer, which took place during a Nintendo Direct presentation on Nov. 12. She wasn't the only newcomer, as Benny Safdie was confirmed to join the cast as Bowser Jr. Additional characters and voice cast for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be announced at a later date.

The trailer mostly focuses on Bowser (Jack Black) trying to paint and work through his anger and become a calmer person. However, it also shows the beloved characters on a brand-new, high-octane adventure, filled with dangers, fights, and new villains. The trailer also teases Rosalina's fierce powers.

Larson and Safdie are joining the previously confirmed voice cast. Aside from the two newcomers and the ones still left to be confirmed, there are several The Super Mario Bros. Moviereturning members. Those include Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), and Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek).

The Super Mario Bros. Movie's Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic return to direct The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, with Matthew Fogel penning the script again.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is based on the widely popular Super Mario Galaxy, released on the Nintendo Wii in 2007, widely considered one of the best video games of all time. However, plot details are still kept under wraps.

Illumination confirmed that The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel was titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie with a teaser in early September. At the same time, it also confirmed the film would hit theaters on Apr. 3, 2026, distributed by Universal Pictures.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie Was a Success Despite Controversies

The video game has been around for over four decades. Even with a lot of competition at the box office and criticism, the 2023 The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a massive commercial hit. The film had several high-profile competitors, but managed to defeat all but one: Barbie. The Super Mario Bros. Movie ended its theatrical run with $1.35 billion worldwide against a production budget of $100 million, just behind Barbie, and ahead of Oppenheimer.

This came despite its poor reception. The Super Mario Bros. Movie didn't receive enough positive reviews for a "fresh" badge and sits just under the threshold for one with a "rotten" 59% rating. However, the audience response couldn't have been more different. Similar to the response another Jack Black video game adaptation received, this year's A Minecraft Movie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie features a thrilling 95% Verified Hot reception from the audience, despite the early criticism over Pratt's casting as the character, who was supposed to be Italian.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will premiere in theaters on Apr. 3, 2026.
