Back to the Future Gets a Limited-Edition Screenplay Release for Its 40th Anniversary

Back to the Future fans have something new to celebrate. In honor of the beloved sci-fi comedy’s 40th anniversary, Insight Editions is releasing a special collector’s edition of the film’s screenplay.

Titled Back to the Future: The Complete Screenplay, the release features the full shooting script along with new context, notes, and behind-the-scenes insight from Bob Gale, the film’s co-writer and co-creator.

The slipcase edition will be extremely limited, with only 500 numbered copies being produced. The book is designed as a premium collector’s item, quarter-bound in textured Wibalin paper with metallic silver cloth. It also includes silver and blue foil details, debossed artwork, and three tip-on images.

The hardcover edition runs 348 pages and includes the complete Back to the Future shooting script, reproduced from Gale’s personal copy. The script is paired with illustrated annotations from Gale, giving fans a deeper look into how the time-travel classic came together.

A Deeper Look at the Making of a Sci-Fi Classic

Back to the Future: The Complete Screenplay presents each page of the 147-page script alongside rare images and added commentary from Gale. According to Insight Editions, the book is designed to take readers through the film’s creative journey, from the original concept to its demanding production schedule and lasting legacy.

The release also includes rarely seen storyboards, rediscovered unit photography, and comparisons from the early version of the movie that featured Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly before Michael J. Fox took over the role. Gale also shares his thoughts on the writing process, filmmaking choices, and the creative decisions that helped shape the final film.

Along with the main hardcover volume, the collector’s set includes a separate facsimile of the script itself. That reproduction is housed in its own protective slipcase and is designed to match the look of the scripts used during production, including the multicolored revision pages used while filming. Each copy is also hand-signed by Bob Gale.

For longtime fans, this makes the release more than just a book. It is a behind-the-scenes artifact that captures the creative energy behind one of the most iconic movies of the 1980s.

Fox as Marty McFly, Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown, Lea Thompson as Lorraine Baines, Crispin Glover as George McFly, and Thomas F. Wilson as Biff Tannen.
