Another Scream Star Casts Doubt on Return for Upcoming Sequel

Latests Your Nerd Side Show:

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet of the Primetime Emmy Awards, Scream franchise actor Jasmin Savoy Brown addressed whether she will be appearing in the next installment amid a slew of high-profile exits from the project. While Savoy Brown is open to returning, she hasn't heard anything from Spyglass Media about a potential comeback. "I haven’t gotten a call. So, I think if you want to ask Spyglass what they’re doing, you can… I haven’t gotten a call," she said.

Savoy Brown is known for portraying Mindy Meeks-Martin, the niece of Jamie Kennedy's Randy Meeks, in the Scream franchise. Mindy is one of the Core Four survivors of the Ghostface killing spree that first debuted in 2022's Scream, alongside her twin brother Chad (Mason Gooding), Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera) and Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega). The quartet reprised their roles for Scream VI as their characters relocated to New York to try and get away from Ghostface, only to be confronted by him once more.

Scream 7 Has Had Troubles

Scream 7 faces serious questions after Barrera and Ortega parted ways with the upcoming sequel. Barrera was axed from the project last November after a series of pro-Palestine social media posts speaking about the war in Gaza, with Spyglass later chastising her comments. A day later, Ortega pulled out of Scream 7, with speculation she did so in solidarity with Barrera, though the official reason was reportedly scheduling conflicts. Ortega is set to reprise her role as Wednesday Addams in Wednesday Season 2 and has been working on Beetlejuice 2, where she'll star as Astrid Deetz.

Before Barrera and Ortega left Scream 7, the film already faced creative obstacles as franchise directors, Radio Silence's Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, opted against helming the movie, passing the torch to Christopher Landon. However, Landon followed suit and left Scream 7 last December, calling working on the sequel, "a dream job that turned into a nightmare." The film has been undergoing several rewrites and been trying to bring back longtime Scream franchise star, Neve Campbell, after a pay dispute saw her pass on Scream VI.

Savoy Brown was at the Emmys to support her fellow Yellowjackets castmates as the series, which sees her star as the teenage Taissa Turner, received a pair of nominations for Season 2. Yellowjackets Season 3 isn't expected to premiere until 2025.
