Peter Parker and MJ have one of Spider-Man’s most famous relationships — but the Marvel Cinematic Universe tells their love story very differently from the comics. After the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the entire world forgets Peter Parker. Peter remembers MJ and everything they shared, but MJ no longer remembers their relationship. Spider-Man: Brand New Day picks up years later with Peter living a very different life. He is still emotionally connected to MJ, even as she has moved forward without remembering the life they once shared. But here’s where Spider-Man comic history gets VERY different. Zendaya’s MCU character is Michelle “MJ” Jones-Watson. She is inspired by elements of Mary Jane Watson, but she isn’t a direct recreation of the classic Marvel Comics character. In Marvel Comics, Gwen Stacy was one of Peter Parker’s most important early loves. Peter met Gwen while attending Empire State University, and their relationship eventually became serious. Mary Jane Watson was also part of Peter’s social circle, and Gwen and Mary Jane even competed for Peter’s attention during those early stories. Then Spider-Man history changed forever. Gwen Stacy was killed during the famous Amazing Spider-Man story “The Night Gwen Stacy Died.” The tragedy had a huge effect on Peter — and on Mary Jane. Mary Jane stayed with Peter during his grief, and their friendship eventually developed into one of Marvel’s most famous romances. Peter and Mary Jane ultimately married in the comics. Years later, Marvel’s controversial “One More Day” storyline erased Peter and Mary Jane’s marriage from continuity. The comic-book era that followed was called — you guessed it — BRAND NEW DAY. So while the MCU’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day borrows ideas from those comics, it does not tell the exact same story. And one more important difference: Gwen Stacy is NOT Peter’s new romantic interest in the current Brand New Day movie. Sadie Sink plays Jean Grey, bringing a major X-Men character into Peter Parker’s story. So what should happen next? Should Peter and MJ eventually find their way back to each other? Following the release of *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*, attention is already turning toward what could be Tom Holland’s fifth solo Spider-Man movie. Tom Holland and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige have both discussed plans for Spider-Man’s future, but Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have not yet announced an official title, release date, full cast or storyline for Spider-Man 5. That leaves some huge questions: Will Peter Parker continue on the path established in *Brand New Day*? Could characters such as MJ, Ned, Jean Grey, Hulk or Punisher return? Will Miles Morales finally enter Peter Parker’s live-action story? And how could Spider-Man’s future connect to the larger MCU? For now, those possibilities remain speculation until Marvel Studios or Sony makes them official. Now the BIG question is: WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? Rotten Tomatoes has already examined where Peter Parker’s story could go after Brand New Day, including the possibilities created by the film’s ending and post-credit developments. Could we see Spider-Man involved with the X-Men? What happens with MJ and Ned? Could Peter’s next adventure connect with Avengers, Doctor Doom or Secret Wars? And what about Miles Morales?
