Star Wars Writer Promises More Knights of Ren Backstory Soon

According to Star Wars writer Charles Soule, fans hoping to get more background information on the enigmatic Knights of Ren will have plenty to chew on in the near future.

Soule is the current writer of Marvel Comics' main, ongoing Star Wars series, as well as the writer of the five-issue crossover event series Star Wars: Crimson Reign. Previously, Soule and artist Will Sliney created the character Ren, the original founder of the Knights of Ren, who was featured prominently in their four-issue limited series Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren, which Marvel published from late 2019 to early 2020.

On Twitter, a pair of Star Wars fans were discussing how very little has been revealed about the Knights of Ren since 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, despite the film seemingly setting them up to be a bigger deal. One user pointed out that Soule fleshed out the Knights of Ren in The Rise of Kylo Ren, though the other asserted that fans still "barely know anything" about the group. It's at this point that Soule himself interjected.

"You should check out Crimson Reign #4 and Star Wars #25," Soule wrote. "That'll give you more to work with!" On that note, Soule previously teased big plans for Star Wars #25 in particular. "Got confirmation that I'll be able to do something very cool for Star Wars #25, my 100th comic set in a galaxy far, far away," the writer tweeted last month. "We'll be, ahem, getting the band(s) back together."

Set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Soule and artist Steven Cummings' Crimson Reign prominently features Ren and the Knights of Ren, who have allied themselves with Qi'ra and Crimson Dawn. Additionally, Soule's current story arc in the main Star Wars series ties directly into the events of Crimson Reign.

Most recently, Marvel published Star Wars #20, which hit comic shops on Jan. 12. Issue #21 is due for release on March 2, followed by issue #22 on March 30 and issue #23 on April 13. Issues #24 and #25 do not currently have announced release dates, though based on this trajectory, Star Wars #25 will likely arrive in the summer, perhaps sometime in or around June.

Meanwhile, Crimson Reign #4 is currently slated for release on April 6. "The Knights of Ren have their role to play in Qi'ra's grand scheme to destabilize the Empire, and their task is arguably the most important," its official solicitation text reads. "Something crucial is locked away in Fortress Vader, and the Knights must steal it."
